|Trying to find a brilliant Halloween day out for the kids can be a bit of a balancing act. You want something properly spooky and fun, but not so scary that nobody sleeps for a week. After a huge sell-out success last year, one local spot seems to have cracked the code. The team at Cedarbarn, a popular farm shop just outside Pickering, has announced its Halloween experience is coming back, and it sounds bigger and better than ever. It's the perfect event for families looking to make some brilliant memories this autumn, with everything from a ghost train to some seriously creative pumpkin carving.
What's happening at the Cedarbarn Halloween event?
Get ready for a full-on festive experience. From the 25th to the 31st of October, this Pickering attraction transforms into a Halloween haven. The main event, of course, is the pumpkin picking. But this isn't just about wandering into a field. To get to the pumpkin patch, everyone gets to hop aboard a ghost train for a spooky ride. Imagine the kids’ faces as they chug along on a specially decorated train, looking for the perfect pumpkin to take home.
Once the ideal pumpkin has been chosen, the fun doesn't stop. The ticket includes access to a dedicated area for carving and crafts. This is an absolute win for parents – all the fun of scooping out pumpkin guts and making a silly or scary face, but without any of the mess to clear up at home. Alongside the carving, there will be plenty of other activities, including crafts and fun games to keep everyone entertained. This whole setup makes it a fantastic, family-friendly day out, offering a complete Halloween experience rather than just a quick visit to a field. It’s the kind of event that families in the Pickering area will be talking about long after the pumpkins have been composted.
The spooktacular new twilight pumpkin picking session
Now, this is something special. New for 2025 is an exciting addition to the Halloween event: a twilight pumpkin picking session. Just picture it – picking out pumpkins by lamplight as it gets dark. It adds a whole new layer of spooky, atmospheric fun to the experience. This family-friendly twilight session is a brilliant idea for those who want to make their pumpkin picking adventure feel a little more magical and mysterious.
The team at Cedarbarn is clearly going all out to make this event memorable. Lauren Turnbull, the assistant general manager, shared some of the plans. She said, “We can’t wait to welcome people to our spooktacular Halloween event and have exciting plans to decorate the Dutch barn and the train, and to serve spooky treats from the Airstream trailer.” So, not only will the whole place look the part, with a decorated Dutch barn and a ghoulish train, but there will also be tasty themed food available from the cool Airstream trailer. This new twilight option is bound to be a massive hit with families looking for a unique Halloween activity.
All the details you need for tickets and times
Booking for an event like this needs to be straightforward, and the team at Cedarbarn has made it really simple with flexible tickets. You just pick the day and the session that works best for your family.
Here are the key details for planning your visit:
- Dates: 25th to 31st October
- Morning Sessions: Start from 10 am
- Afternoon Sessions: Start from 1 pm
- Twilight Session: Wednesday, 29th October, from 6 pm
Lauren Turnbull explained how the sessions work:
“Our flexible tickets mean you can pick a day and a session to suit you. We have morning and afternoon sessions, which start at 10 am and 1 pm respectively. You are free to ride the ghost train to pick your pumpkin, then head to the carving and crafts area anytime during your session. The twilight session runs from 6 pm on Wednesday, 29th October.”
A child’s ticket costs £12.99, which is great value as it includes the ghost train ride, one pumpkin, and access to all the carving, crafts, and games. An adult ticket for the train ride is just £3.00, and it’s important to know that children must be accompanied by an adult on the train. If one pumpkin isn't enough (because who can choose just one?), additional pumpkins can be bought from the Farm Shop. Tickets are available to book online, so it’s best to get in early to secure a spot for this popular event.
More than just a Halloween attraction
While the Halloween event is a massive draw, Cedarbarn is a fantastic destination all year round. It’s much more than just a seasonal attraction. Located on Thornton Road, it’s a thriving local hub with an award-winning Café and a brilliant Farm Shop. The shop is stocked with local produce, homemade goodies, and high-quality meat from its own butchery. So, after a fun session of pumpkin picking, families can pop into the farm shop to grab something delicious for dinner.
And for families with a four-legged friend, there’s even a dedicated dog walking field. It’s a safe, enclosed space where dogs can run around and have a brilliant time. The miniature railway, which becomes the ghost train for Halloween, is another popular feature throughout the year. The combination of the farm shop, butchery, café, and dog walking field makes Cedarbarn a proper day-out destination for local families and visitors to the Pickering area. It’s a place that champions local food and provides a great space for the community to enjoy. This year's Halloween event, especially with the new twilight pumpkin picking, is just one more reason to pay it a visit.
