More About South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire is a ceremonial and metropolitan county of England. There are four council areas in South Yorkshire, specifically the cities of Sheffield and Doncaster, and the boroughs of Barnsley and Rotherham.

The west of the county is in the Pennines, with the southern part of South Yorkshire including a section of the Peak District National Park, making the area popular with walkers, cyclists, climbers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

The county has a population of around 1.34 million people, mostly living in Sheffield, which has a population of over 556,000.

South Yorkshire as an administrative region was created by the Local Government Act 1972, which came into force in 1974. Before then, it was governed as a part of the larger county of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire County Council stopped overseeing the region in 1986; some of those services are now overseen by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

The main settled towns and the city of Sheffield grew up around the steel and mining industries, with coal mining in particular forming an important part of the industrial history of the region.
