Visited 06/01/26, absolutely beautiful place, with a cozy, relaxed atmosphere, the renovation as to be seen. We were made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived, staff were brilliant & gave us lots of information on the drinks/menu without being over bearing. Food came out fresh, hot & absolutely delicious. Would 100% recommend.
First, it’s great to see the place open again and the business doing well. For me, the beer selection is poor. I think it would be more fitting to have real ales and additional independent options as opposed to the coors brewery swill, but hopefully things will change when they can. The food. I’ve eaten here about four times now. The food quality is on the high end of OK, but it’s far from amazing. It’s certainly the best pub food you can eat in Pontefract town centre, but the price vs quality ratio is a little imbalanced. If you wish to venture further afield , you could get much better food for price on the outskirts or nearby cities. The staff and service are excellent. The team are friendly and attentive. Great job. Overall an excellent addition to Pontefract and its good to have you back. Note: the pie picture is from the first day it opened. I’ve had it since and the presentation is much better. Rating is based on location. Update: 2026. I had the mixed grill again in Jan and it was really good. I’ve had this before but the ingredients have changed slightly, and it’s better for it. As you’ll see additional mix grill picture, the portion sizes are larger. Personally , this is welcome. Service is still good, the staff could do with more support though. Waistcoat guy was like a one man army today - Fairplay, but they need support when busy as there is lots going on. My partner had the pizza and she was very impressed with that as well.
Amazing, renovation of original old building. Very sympathetically renovated to retain a unique atmosphere. Great place to enjoy a really well presented menu at very reasonable prices. Will make a special visit, whenever We're in Pontefract, and highly recommend others to seek it out.
Decided to treat the wife to a breakfast out this morning. For a change she decided to order the Masala Frittata. The waitress kept calling it a fajita even after being corrected. When the fritatta arrived she was very disappointed. There was no spices/ curry flavour at all, it was very bland and quite flat and omelette like rather than thick like a fritatta should be. My wife had a word with the waitress who again kept repeating fajita then she wanted the menu to see how it was described on the menu. My wife explained there was no spice in the potatoes and it was bland like a Spanish omelette. The waitress said she would have a word with the chef and after a few minutes later came back with a small pot of Masala paste saying I could put some of that on for extra taste. The paste was very thick / unspreadable and it is meant to be cooked / added to foods like in a curry. At this point she gave up and decided just to eat the bland omelette. There were no apologies. My wife has already said she won't go back because of the food and the staff which is a shame as my full English was lovely. We paid and left. The pub wasn't busy at all so I can't think the chef was under pressure, very disappointing.
First visit, great historic building, beautifully restored. Great Sunday lunch menu, with a variety of roasts and a few fish options and a few other pub lunch classics. My lamb rack was perfectly cooked, generous portions, and reasonably priced. Already planning our next visit!
