This Saturday, 4 July, Mount Pleasant Park in Sheffield will come alive with the vibrant sounds and sights of the Sharrow Festival, returning for its 29th year after a year away due to financial challenges. Known for its multicultural spirit, the festival promises to be bigger and better than ever, featuring a packed programme that showcases the creativity and diversity of the local community.

Festival Overview

The Sharrow Festival is a free, one-day event that brings together music, dance, art, food, and activities for all ages. Typically attracting around 4,000 visitors, this year’s festival will run from 12 noon to 8 pm, providing a full day of entertainment. With four stages set up across the park, attendees can expect a variety of performances and activities that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of Sheffield.

Exciting New Features

This year, a new highlight is the Youth Music Stage, organised by the local Hybrid 3 Studio. This stage will give emerging young artists a platform to showcase their talents. The festival will also feature the Sheffield Graffiti Jam, where talented spray can artists from across the country will create live art throughout the day, adding a dynamic visual element to the event.

Musical Line-up

Music lovers will be treated to an exciting line-up of Sheffield DJs and bands. Notable acts include:

  • Maypleef and JuJu Master from Calabash!

  • Donpapa and Magzy from Native Sonics

  • DJ Dylor, powered by Demus sound system

The main Music Stage, hosted by MC Jonny Douglas, will feature six of Sheffield’s finest bands, while the Community Stage will welcome back popular local acts, including Cowbird and live Nigerian music from Café Sound. This year's festival also introduces a youth dance performance led by Chekere Williams, showcasing the talents of young dancers from the community.

A Celebration of Community Resilience

The return of the Sharrow Festival is a significant achievement, especially considering the challenges faced over the past year. After last year’s cancellation due to funding issues, a dedicated team of volunteers worked tirelessly to raise the necessary funds through various community events.

Alan Deadman, one of the festival’s volunteers, expressed the importance of the festival in bringing people together:

“It’s been an uphill struggle to bring the festival back. We all feel that it is so important to bring people from all ethnic backgrounds together to enjoy themselves, particularly now when there are people out there trying to sow division and hatred.”

Why It Matters

The Sharrow Festival is more than just a fun day out; it is a celebration of cultural diversity and community strength. It serves as a reminder of what can be achieved when local residents come together to create a space for joy, culture, and togetherness. The festival highlights the importance of community engagement, showcasing local talents and fostering connections among residents.
