Welcome to Yorkshire
News • July 6th, 2026
|The launch of the Airedale Seniors Collective (ASC) has been celebrated as a significant success, with the event taking place at Sutton Village Hall on July 6, 2026. This newly formed group aims to provide essential support to older residents in the Aire Valley, creating a welcoming space for socialising and accessing vital resources. The launch event featured a full red-carpet rollout, live music, and a delicious spread of food, all designed to create an enjoyable atmosphere for the community.
Airedale Seniors Collective Mission
The Airedale Seniors Collective was established in response to feedback from local residents who expressed a need for dedicated spaces where older people could gather and engage with one another. Organised by Spellman Care, the initiative aims to combat social isolation among the elderly and ensure that their voices are heard within the community.

“None of us come into the care industry as public speakers. We all talk with passion, from our hearts, and that’s why the collective is even more important—to ensure that every older person and carer’s voice is heard.”
Event Highlights
The afternoon was filled with excitement as attendees enjoyed a live saxophone performance by Phil Benson, followed by an upbeat set from former cruise ship singer Shane Hamill. The atmosphere was lively, with guests tapping their feet and even getting up to dance, showcasing the community spirit that the ASC aims to foster. One attendee, Mr Shaw, entertained the crowd by using his walking stick as an impromptu guitar, highlighting the joy and creativity present at the event.

Guests expressed their appreciation for the event, with Mr and Mrs Shaw sharing:
“To be quite honest, it’s a real relief to get out of the house and go somewhere that isn’t a hospital or a doctor’s appointment for once! It was lovely to see so many stalls with lots of information. The music was brilliant and really took us back.”
Community Support and Feedback
The event garnered overwhelming positive feedback, with many attendees expressing gratitude for the support provided by the Airedale Seniors Collective. Local Councillor George Buckley praised the initiative:
“It is a great initiative and brought together local service providers and businesses.”
Councillor Wendy Harrison, who is establishing the Keighley Memories Group for dementia support, added:
“We had a wonderful afternoon with you all. The food was delicious and the event was very much needed.”
The ASC also served as a networking hub, featuring stalls from essential local charities and businesses, including Right at Home Ilkley, Wiltshire Farm Foods, and Keighley Dementia Advice Community Group. This collaborative approach is vital for creating a supportive environment for older adults.
Future Plans and Directory of Services
Following the successful launch, the Airedale Seniors Collective has exciting plans for the future. They are currently working on a comprehensive directory of local services available to older generations. This directory will include everything from handy people and cleaners to dental services and care homes. Importantly, this directory will be built entirely on community recommendations, ensuring that only trusted services are included. No payments will be accepted from businesses for inclusion, maintaining the directory's integrity.
Anyone wishing to recommend a local service can submit their suggestions via email, contributing to a resource that will support independent living for many seniors in the area.
Next Gathering
The Airedale Seniors Collective has already set a date for its next gathering, scheduled for September 15, 2026, from 2 PM to 4 PM at Silsden Methodist Church. Organisers are eager to welcome back familiar faces and meet new members of the community, continuing to build a strong network of support.
The launch event showcased the potential of the Airedale Seniors Collective to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older residents. By providing a space for social interaction and access to vital resources, the ASC is poised to become an essential part of the community, helping to reduce loneliness and foster connections among seniors in the Aire Valley.
