As summer says its goodbyes, it's easy to think the fun is over. But that's not the case in the Bradford District. Actually, this September is packed with amazing events and activities for everyone. From exploring local heritage and celebrating agriculture to diving into world-class art and spoken word performances, there's a real buzz around the city. With Bradford 2025 in full swing, the culture scene is getting bigger and better. So, if anyone is looking for something to fill their diary, there are plenty of highlights to check out across Bradford.

Step back in time with Heritage Open Days

Ever walked past an old building and wondered what stories it could tell? Well, between 12th and 21st September, lots of them are opening their doors for free. The Heritage Open Days are back, and this year's theme is "Buildings, Bridges and Beehives." It's all about the amazing spaces people have built and the history they hold. Across the Bradford District and neighbouring Calderdale, visitors can discover all sorts of historical attractions. Think poetic birthplaces and even towering follies - which are basically quirky, decorative buildings built just for fun. It's a fantastic chance to explore the rich heritage of the area without spending a penny. There are so many interesting places to see, celebrating everything from grand architecture to tiny beehives.

Get connected through art in Ilkley

For anyone who loves a bit of creativity, Ilkley Manor House is the place to be. Teaming up with Ilkley Arts, it's hosting the Ilkley Art Open Exhibition from 6th September to 12th October. The exhibition is open every weekend and is completely free to enter. The theme this year is "Connection," and it features a huge range of contemporary art from artists around the world. What does connection mean to them? It could be about connecting with people, nature, or even their own feelings. The showcase includes everything from paintings and photography to textiles and more, so there's a lot for art lovers to discover. It's a great opportunity to see how different artists explore the same idea in their own unique styles, creating a powerful collective performance of creativity.

Experience a proper show day in Keighley

Nothing says a classic family day out quite like an agricultural show. On Saturday, 6th September, the Keighley and District Agricultural Show is happening, and it promises a brilliant mix of tradition and entertainment. Visitors can check out the competitions for livestock (think prize-winning cows and sheep), perfectly-grown vegetables, and even the local dogs. Plus, there will be displays of vintage cars and tractors for those who love old machines. For anyone feeling creative, there are art and handicraft workshops to join. The main event in the centre arena is a performance from Dangerous Steve, which is sure to be jaw-dropping. It's a day packed with activities that celebrate the best of local agriculture and community spirit.

Listen up for the BBC Contains Strong Language festival

As part of the run-up to Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, the BBC is bringing its annual poetry and spoken word festival, Contains Strong Language, to Bradford. From 18th to 21st September, the city will be filled with powerful words and exciting performances. Spoken word is a bit like poetry performed out loud, often with a lot of rhythm and passion. It's an incredible art form. Many of the events are free, and there will be lots of BBC radio shows recorded live. Here are some of the festival highlights:

  • Antony Szmierek (19th September 2025): After a massive summer playing at places like Glastonbury, this spoken-word artist and musician is doing a special gig at St George's Hall. Expect infectious lyrics and a great performance. Tickets are £17.50.
  • The Archers Podcast Recording (18th September 2025): Fans of the long-running radio drama can join a live podcast recording at St George's Hall. It's a chance to hear behind-the-scenes secrets. Tickets are free but need to be booked. This podcast is a big part of British culture.
  • Words First Showcase (21st September 2025): This free event at St George's Hall is a showcase for the UK's most talented up-and-coming poets and spoken word artists. A chance to see the next big names in the society of spoken word.

Discover Bradford's pop-up culture hub: Loading Bay

What was once a disused storage depot has been transformed into Loading Bay, a temporary hub for Bradford 2025. It's a pop-up venue, which means it's here for a good time, not a long time, and it's hosting some brilliant and edgy events this September. Here's what's on the schedule at Loading Bay:

Event Date Details Tickets
Eggs Collective's Dark Nights 5th September 2025 This female-led performance group is marking the Equinox - the day when day and night are of equal length. They promise a cabaret night that celebrates shorter days and darker humour. It's an 18+ event full of comedy and maybe a few freaky friends joining the performance. £8
Kailey 11th-13th September 2025 This is a bold comedy-drama about an 18-year-old whose mum is in prison. It's described as a "funny and searingly honest" look at the forgotten young people in our society. Written by someone with lived experience, this play doesn't ask for sympathy; instead, "it demands you look closer." A powerful piece of art. £12

These performances offer something a bit different and show the exciting, modern culture taking root in Bradford. Getting tickets for these unique shows at Loading Bay is a must for anyone wanting to see fresh, new work.
