The city of Wakefield is on the cusp of a remarkable transformation with the redevelopment of its former market hall into the Wakefield Exchange, a new hub for creative and digital businesses. Set to open in winter 2024, this venture will become a centrepiece of the city’s cultural rejuvenation, forming part of the ambitious "Our Year 2024" programme.

Revitalising Wakefield's Market Hall

Wakefield’s historic market hall, long a symbol of the city’s vibrant commerce, is being reimagined into an innovative events space. The £7.7 million project, funded by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport and Wakefield Council, represents a significant investment in the city’s future. By repurposing the market hall, the Wakefield Exchange aims to provide a permanent venue for events that will draw both residents and visitors to the city centre.

The redevelopment is a key element of the council’s strategy to boost local culture and creativity. Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, emphasized the importance of this project for the community:

"The Wakefield Exchange will offer residents a fantastic experience with an exciting programme of events and activities in a landmark venue. We have listened to feedback from residents and we’re pleased that we’re now at this stage, as we look forward to launching the venue later this year."

Opportunities for local businesses

As part of its mission to invigorate Wakefield’s economy, the Wakefield Exchange is now inviting applications from local businesses, particularly those in the creative, digital, food, and drink sectors. Entrepreneurs from Wakefield and the broader West Yorkshire area are encouraged to apply for business tenancies within the new venue. This initiative is designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises, offering them a prime location in the heart of the city.

The Exchange will feature dedicated business spaces tailored to the needs of creative and digital companies, providing an environment where innovation can thrive. In addition to stimulating local entrepreneurship, the venue will create new jobs in the catering sector, further contributing to the economic regeneration of Wakefield.

Our year 2024: a cultural renaissance

The launch of Wakefield Exchange is a major component of "Our Year 2024," a 366-day celebration of culture and creativity across the district. This initiative, led by Wakefield Council and supported by various partners, aims to leave a lasting legacy for the city and its residents. With significant funding from West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Arts Council England, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the programme will feature a diverse array of events designed to engage the community and attract visitors.

Notable events previously held at the market hall site, such as the Festival of the Moon, Fire and Ice exhibition, and the Rhubarb Festival, have set a high standard for what the Wakefield Exchange can offer. These events have been met with widespread acclaim, drawing large crowds and showcasing the potential of this new venue.

How to apply

Businesses interested in being part of this exciting new development can apply for a tenancy at the Wakefield Exchange through the official website, www.wxwakefield.co.uk. The application deadline is Monday, 26th August 2024. This is a unique opportunity for local entrepreneurs to secure a space in what promises to be a vibrant and dynamic environment at the heart of Wakefield’s cultural revival.

The Wakefield Exchange is more than just a venue; it represents a commitment to fostering creativity, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the city’s cultural landscape. As the project moves forward, it is set to become a cornerstone of Wakefield’s regeneration, providing a space where innovation and community spirit can flourish.
