Wakefield Council has extended its Shop Security Grant Scheme, enabling even more businesses across the district to enhance their shop security. This initiative provides eligible business owners with grants of up to £6,000 to bolster security measures, reducing crime and anti-social behaviour on local high streets.

Expanding the Reach of the Grant Scheme

Initially available in specific town centres, the Shop Security Grant Scheme has now been expanded to include businesses in Featherstone, Hemsworth, Horbury, Knottingley, Ossett, and Pontefract. The scheme will also remain accessible to businesses in Castleford, Normanton, South Elmsall, and Wakefield city centre. Businesses are encouraged to apply quickly, as the grants are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Supporting a Safe Shopping Environment

Cllr Michael Graham, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth, expressed enthusiasm about the scheme's expansion. He highlighted its dual benefit: not only does it make shops more secure, but it also contributes to creating a safer shopping environment for customers and staff alike. Additionally, the improved security could lead to lower insurance premiums for businesses.

What the Grant Covers

Eligible businesses can receive up to 80% of the cost of security enhancements, capped at £6,000. The upgrades must involve a minimum investment of £3,750. Examples of eligible improvements include the installation of security shutters, the fitting or upgrading of intruder alarms, and the addition of CCTV systems.

So far, £116,000 has been allocated to 21 properties, which, when combined with investments from the businesses themselves, totals nearly £170,000 in security improvements.

Important Deadlines and Details

Businesses interested in applying have until 24 December 2024 to submit their applications. If the proposed improvements require planning permission—such as the installation of new shutters—applications for planning must be submitted by 30 September 2024 to allow adequate time for processing.

The £229,000 Shop Security Grant Scheme is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and will run until March 2025 or until all available grants have been distributed. It's important to note that the scheme does not cover retrospective claims; only future security upgrades are eligible.
