About Wakefield Cathedral
Description
A warm welcome at the heart of the city.
Wakefield Cathedral exists in order to worship God and point others to him. We seek to help people live as disciples of Jesus Christ, and to share his love with the world. We are set in the heart of the city of Wakefield, and endeavour to offer a warm welcome to all who enter or pass by our doors. We have made public our desire that everyone who lives in Wakefield District will come inside at least once a year. We try to give priority to people who are needy or disadvantaged. We hope to be a place of conversation for people of all faiths and none, and a cultural hub in the city centre.
For over 1000 years people have been gathering in this holy place to offer their prayers and praise to Almighty God. Wakefield Cathedral is located right in the centre of the city, surrounded by shops and businesses, with people passing our doors as they go about their daily life. Many of those people come by to light a candle, say a prayer, or spend a moment of stillness and calm. Visit Wakefield Cathedral to embark on a voyage of historical and spiritual discovery!
There are many fascinating treasures to discover in Wakefield Cathedral:
- fine medieval carvings including many animals and green men
- impressive, finely carved screen behind the high altar
- the most complete collection of stained glass by Charles Kempe in the world
- unusual octagonal font dating from 1661
- magnificent east end extension built to celebrate the creation of the Diocese of Wakefield
The Cathedral is open to visitors from 9.00am to 4.00pm, Monday to Saturday and for worship at advertised service times. Entrance to the Cathedral is free, but donations would be appreciated.

Even though live nearby, visited this cathedral for first time. It's up there with more renowned cathedrals around the country. Friendly informative staff lots of architecture and stained glass windows. It's free admission can make a voluntary donation if you wish. Well worth a visit if visiting Wakefield or nearby area.
wow, what an amazing Cathedral. I just happened to visit when there was an abseil event on so that was lots of people outside watching people come down on ropes. Lovely building and well worth a visit if your in the area and its free too !
A lovely cathedral worthy of a visit. It was so peaceful. The stained glass windows are stunning. A small gift shop.
Beautiful classic Cathedral, bang in the centre of Town. Good access from both the front door (steps) or side door (flat access). A good size carpark is only a 5 min walk away.
It was very quiet when I visited with no volunteers around to greet or help. But it was a lovely visit as you can spend so much time admiring the stained glass windows and the architecture. There are candles available for use. Plenty of space for calm prayer and reflection. There is a small gift section, but there was no staff there on the Monday afternoon I visited.
