About Pugneys Country Park

Description

Pugneys Country Park is a haven for wildlife and the perfect place for a family day out. The leafy woodland is perfect for exploring, the sloping fields are an ideal picnic spot, and the well-maintained paths mean that walkers, joggers and cyclists of all ages and abilities can enjoy the views across the 100-acre central lake.

Pugneys’ second, smaller, lake is a Local Nature Reserve overlooked by two bird hives, allowing visitors to get a glimpse of the wildlife teeming about the site.

Kids will love the park’s Blown Away Adventure trail. Based on the charming children’s book by local author Conrad Burdekin, there’s loads of activities to do, including puzzles, counting, a zipline, and lots more. For the truly adventurous, there’s also a pirate adventure playground!

Fancy a mini-train ride? Of course you do! Pugneys Light Railway (available on selected weekends) is a 7¼” gauge passenger-carrying miniature railway, providing train rides for all the family. All aboard!

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, why not take a walk up the hill to Sandal Castle? Little ones will love playing amongst the ruins of the old motte and bailey while you soak up the stunning views across the Calder Valley.
And after an adventure like that, you’re sure to be a bit peckish - no problem! Relax at the Boat House Cafe and treat yourself to a selection of hot and cold treats and drinks. Oh, and don’t forget your loyalty card (which you can use at The Liquorice Cafe at Pontefract Castle and the Woodland Cafe at Anglers Country Park, too)! Free cake? Sounds good to us!

And as if all this wasn’t enough, kids (and big kids!) can download the Love Exploring augmented reality app and hunt for dinosaurs or fairies at Pugneys and Sandal, too.

Something for everyone. Families, runners, cyclists, couples or a mindful walk by yourself. It's got toilets, cafe and ice-cream van. Parking is cheap but I suggest you get there before lunch time as it fills up quick. It has a flat walk around the water. Active activities on the walk round as well as a kiddies play area. Trails leading off to various places including some ruins

Dear readers, when I arrived, I was amazed by what I saw. A magnificent park area, excellent playgrounds for children, and many birds on the water. It’s a great place for a family outing. I was truly impressed — I highly recommend it to everyone!

"Excellent park with plenty of parking. Enjoyed the scenic walk and seeing the wildlife. The mini railway is a great value at just £2, and the cafe serves good coffee. They also have food options available."

We've been a few times. It's a nice walk around a lake or pond. I'm not sure what it's classed as. It's a body of water. And there's a play area with a sand pit that my kids love to get dirty in.

A fantastic place for a leisurely dog walk! The views are beautiful and the path is well maintained! There’s a large car park which you pay £2.50 for 4 hours which is very good value! There’s a cafe serving a wide range of food and snacks, plus toilets by the reception. It’s great for dogs and there’s ply of bins along the lake path! There’s a playground and nature trail for kids to keep them interested! Plus a light railway too!
