Welcome to Yorkshire
Inspiration • July 18th, 2025
|York’s culinary scene is set to welcome a vibrant new addition this August, as award-winning Thai restaurant Giggling Squid prepares to open the doors of its newest venue in the city centre on Monday 4 August 2025.
Housed in the historic former Banks Music Room, believed to be the oldest retail premises in the UK, the new Giggling Squid restaurant will blend Thai flair with a touch of York’s rich heritage. Located between St Helen’s Square and Museum Gardens, the site offers picturesque views and a unique setting for visitors and locals to enjoy Thai cuisine in the heart of the city.
The restaurant will seat up to 213 guests across two floors, featuring signature floral interiors, bold lighting, and elegant banquette seating that reflect the brand’s playful style and warm hospitality.
Thai Spirit Meets Yorkshire Pride
As a welcome gift to the city, the restaurant will offer 50% off food during its opening week for all diners who pre-book via their website. Availability is limited to ensure the new team can settle in and deliver the brand’s high standard of service from day one.
A Menu Full of Bold Thai Flavours
Inspired by co-founder Pranee Laurillard’s childhood food memories in Thailand, the menu focuses on fresh, flavoursome dishes crafted by expert Thai chefs. Highlights include popular dishes like Salt & Pepper Squid, Massaman Curry, and Thai Melting Beef, as well as an extensive vegetarian selection.
The lunch menu features affordable Samrub Sets from £12.95 and quick meals like Pad Thai or Thai Green Curry starting at £11.75, perfect for those looking to enjoy a delicious break in the middle of a busy day.
A full takeaway service via Deliveroo and click-and-collect will follow a few weeks after the initial launch, expanding access to Giggling Squid’s bold Thai cuisine across York.
