|Ever think about the people who help make our communities tick? There are the obvious ones, like doctors and teachers. But some heroes work a bit more behind the scenes, helping families through really tough times or making sure older people have the support they need. These are the nation's social workers, and their incredible social work often doesn't get the massive fanfare it deserves. But that’s starting to change, especially right here in York. The City of York Council has announced that some of its dedicated team members are getting a much-deserved moment in the spotlight, having been nominated for some very special national awards.
What's it's about?
The big news is that social workers from the City of York Council’s Adult and Children’s Social Work teams are up for the national Amazing Social Worker Awards. It’s not just a pat on the back; it's a huge deal. This whole thing is organised by the British Association of Social Workers, or BASW for short. Think of them as the main organisation for social workers across the UK. Their annual campaign is all about celebrating the amazing achievements in social work.
And it's a proper national event. This year, over 300 different individuals and teams from all over the country got a nomination from their colleagues. It’s not just one type of role being recognised either. The nominations cover a whole range of people who make a difference, including:
Frontline practitioners: These are the social workers out and about every day, meeting with families and individuals directly.
Managers and leaders: The people who support the teams and make sure everything runs smoothly.
Educators: The ones who train the next generation of social workers, passing on their vital skills.
Students and newly qualified social workers: Recognising the fresh talent and dedication coming into the profession.
The whole point of the campaign is to put a spotlight on the exceptional social work happening in our communities. Throughout March, BASW will be sharing stories of these achievements on its website and social media, all building up to the World Social Work Day celebrations. It’s a fantastic way to show appreciation for a job that requires huge amounts of skill, patience, and compassion.
York's own superstars get the nod
Naturally, everyone at the City of York Council is pretty chuffed. Having their teams recognised with nominations for these national awards confirms what they've known all along – their social workers are doing a brilliant job. The dedication they show day in, day out makes a real difference to people's lives across the city.
Cllr Bob Webb, who is the council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, shared his thoughts. He said:
We know that our social workers go the extra mile for the young people and families they work with day after day, which is one of the reasons our Children’s Social Care service was assessed as Outstanding by Ofsted last year. I’m so pleased that once again, the tireless efforts of our team in York have been recognised nationally. Huge congratulations to all those involved.
It’s clear that this recognition isn’t a one-off. It builds on a track record of excellence, showing the consistent determination of the team. Adding to this, Cllr Lucy Steels Walshaw, the Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, explained:
This campaign highlights some of the very best social work practice in the country, and I’m so pleased that York’s social workers are among those being recognised. I also want to thank all our social workers for everything they do. Their dedication, compassion, and determination to improve people’s lives every single day make an extraordinary difference across our city.
Why this matters more than just a trophy
Getting nominated for the Amazing Social Worker Awards is fantastic, but the campaign itself shines a light on why social work is so important. It's a profession built on helping people navigate some of life's biggest challenges. Social workers are there to support, to protect, and to empower. They work to ensure fairness and to challenge injustices that people might be facing.
Lewis Roberts, the Vice-Chair of BASW UK, explained the bigger picture. He said: “BASW is proud to run our Amazing Social Workers campaign for its sixth consecutive year. It is a wonderful way for our profession to celebrate inspiring social work practice and pay tribute to the many individual and collective successes that deserve to be noticed.” He went on to highlight the incredible difference social workers make across all our communities, from helping children and families to supporting adults. He added, "Whether it’s advancing people’s rights and challenging injustices, to advocating for fairness and promoting wellbeing, the role of social work has never been more important during these challenging times." This really gets to the heart of it - it’s about promoting social wellbeing and fighting for people who need a champion in their corner.
A global day for a vital job
This whole campaign and the celebrations are timed perfectly to lead into a very important date in the calendar. On Tuesday, 17th March, people all over the globe will be marking World Social Work Day. It’s an international event designed to raise awareness about the vital contributions of the profession. This year’s theme is “Co-building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,” which feels more relevant than ever.
The Amazing Social Worker Awards campaign is a key part of these celebrations in the UK. By sharing the achievements of people like the nominees from the City of York Council, the British Association of Social Workers helps everyone understand the positive impact of this essential work. It’s a moment to pause and appreciate the dedication, compassion, and determination that these professionals bring to their roles every single day. A huge congratulations to all the nominated social workers in York – their hard work is truly making a difference.
