|York City Football Club has exciting news for its supporters: forward Dipo Akinyemi is making a comeback to the LNER Community Stadium. The 29-year-old player is returning to the club after two successful years with the Minstermen, having previously played there from 2023 to 2025. This signing comes after Akinyemi's stint with Derry City, and the deal is subject to international clearance.
Previous Success at York City
Akinyemi initially joined York City from Ayr United, where he quickly made a name for himself. He scored the opening goal of the 2023/24 National League season, setting a positive tone for the campaign. The striker continued to impress fans throughout the season, finishing with an impressive tally of 15 goals. His performance earned him the prestigious Keith Walwyn Memorial Golden Boot, an award given to the top goalscorer for the club.
During his time with York City, Akinyemi played a crucial role in helping the team secure a second-place finish in the league and reach the play-offs in 2025. His contributions on the pitch were significant, and his departure for Derry City was felt deeply by the fans.
Recent Performance at Derry City
After leaving York, Akinyemi joined Derry City, where he got off to a strong start in the League of Ireland Premier Division. In his first seven appearances for Derry, he scored three goals and provided two assists. However, an injury hindered his performance later in the season. Despite this setback, he managed to play regularly in the current season, scoring three goals in 17 appearances.
Akinyemi’s Journey in Football
Before his time at York City, Akinyemi had an impressive run at Ayr United, where he was the top scorer in the Scottish Championship, netting 24 goals and assisting 11 times. His outstanding performances earned him the title of Player of the Season in the division. Akinyemi began his football career at Potters Bar Town and Stevenage before moving on to play for various clubs, including Dulwich Hamlet and Welling United.
