Two young lions, Felix and Jabari, have recently received a certificate of good health, marking an important milestone in their journey since being rescued from war-torn Ukraine. Their mother, Aysa, was saved alongside her cubs and brought to a safe haven at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where they have been thriving.

Health Check Success

Last week, Felix and Jabari underwent a thorough health check by a team of expert vets from the International Zoo Veterinary Group. This full MOT included examining their hearts, teeth, lungs, stomachs, skin, joints, and feet. The Director of Animals, Dr Charlotte MacDonald, stated:

“The team conducted a round of check-ups at Lion Country, looking at young Felix and Jabari's heart, teeth, lungs, stomach, skin, joints and feet. Jabari also had one of his claws trimmed.”

“We’re very happy with their progress and the checks, leaving us with no concerns whatsoever.”

This positive feedback is great news for everyone involved in their care.

Playful Cubs in Lion Country

Felix and Jabari are part of a lively group at Lion Country, which is home to lions rescued from various missions, including those from the Ukrainian conflict. Alongside their siblings, Nala, Emi, Santa, and Teddi, they form a playful and mischievous family. The three cubs were born in March of last year and have been enjoying their new life in Yorkshire.

Rangers at the park have developed a unique way to identify Felix and Jabari. They observe the distinct patterns of spots on their fur, which helps them tell the two cubs apart in photographs. This attention to detail is crucial in ensuring that both lions receive the best care possible.

A History of Rescue

The journey of Lion Country began in 2010, when the park became home to 13 Romanian lions rescued from dire conditions. This successful mission earned the park international recognition and motivated them to take on further rescue efforts, including the recent mission in 2024, which saved Aysa and her cubs.

The other lions in the park, Oleg, Rafael, and Shanti, were rescued in 2025 and initially faced many challenges. However, they have now settled into their new environment, showcasing the park's commitment to providing a safe and nurturing space for these animals.

Community Support and Conservation Efforts

The successful transport of Aysa and her cubs from Ukraine was made possible through the fundraising efforts of the Wildlife Foundation, a charity associated with the park. They raised funds to cover the specialist transport costs for the 1,700-mile journey. This demonstrates the importance of community support in conservation efforts.

Now, Felix and Jabari are fully recuperated and reunited with their sister Nala. Visitors to Lion Country can see this energetic trio in their seven-acre habitat, which consists of three specially designed reserves. The park not only provides a safe home for lions but also offers a unique experience for visitors who can come almost face-to-face with various endangered species.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park's Commitment to Conservation

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is dedicated to conservation and has successfully brought a total of 17 lions to Lion Country over the years. Their first rescue mission set a precedent for future efforts, leading to the successful rescue of Aysa and her cubs. The park aims to educate the public about wildlife conservation while offering an unforgettable experience, allowing visitors to observe animals like Amur leopards, tigers, giraffes, sea lions, and black rhinos.

In addition to its conservation work, the park features The Hex Wildlife Hotel and The Yorkshire Hive, which includes shopping, dining, and entertainment options for families visiting the area. This combination of conservation, education, and family-friendly activities makes Yorkshire Wildlife Park a unique destination.
