•Calderdale Council is gearing up for a spectacular four-day celebration at Shibden Park this summer, marking the park's 100th anniversary as a public space. From the 13th to the 16th of August, the event, titled ‘Stage at the Lake’, promises a vibrant mix of music, comedy, and creativity that reflects the rich cultural scene of West Yorkshire.

Since the initial announcement of the programme, several new names have been added to the roster, making this event even more exciting. The festival will feature a diverse array of performances, including:

Brassed Off Live - Orchestra performing in grand circular concert hallThe festival kicks off on Thursday, 13th August, with a special event called Theatre at the Lake. This opening night will celebrate the world of musicals, featuring a range of performances from classic hits like Miss Saigon and The Wizard of Oz to modern favourites like Elf and Matilda. The evening will be produced by acclaimed musical director Matthew J Loughran, with performances from Yorkshire stars such as Laura Pick and Emma Williams. New additions to the lineup include Ben Forster and Joel Montague, both of whom are well-known figures in the musical theatre scene.
The following day, Friday, 14th August, will showcase emerging talent in a programme called Debut at the Lake. This event is aimed at young musicians from the region, allowing them to perform and gain valuable experience in sound and production. Acts already announced include Doogle, Grow, Herbie May, and sibling duo The Incident, with more performers to be revealed soon.
Later that evening, the festival will shift gears with Laughter at the Lake, a comedy night featuring some of the UK's favourite stand-up comedians. Hosted by Kyla Cobbler, the lineup includes Russell Kane, Rich Hall, and Louise Young, promising a night full of laughter and entertainment.
Classical Music and Film
On Saturday, 15th August, the festival will present Proms at the Lake, featuring a performance by the English Chamber Orchestra alongside the Halifax Choral Society. This special concert will include timeless classical pieces, set against the stunning backdrop of Shibden Park, which has been a cherished public space since it was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1926. A unique performance from Northern Ballet, inspired by the life of Anne Lister—famous for her role in the BBC series *Gentleman Jack*—will also be part of the evening.
Wrapping up the festival on Sunday, 16th August, will be Brass at the Lake. This event celebrates Calderdale's rich brass band tradition with a live screening of the film Brassed Off, accompanied by a performance from the renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band. This special screening marks 30 years since the film was shot at the nearby Piece Hall and will include a discussion for film enthusiasts.
Community Engagement
Throughout the festival, visitors can explore the Seeds of Hope community garden trail, which will showcase eight mini-gardens designed by local groups and schools. This initiative is part of a partnership between Calderdale Council and UNESCO, aiming to bring nature and creativity together. The gardens will not only enhance the festival experience but will also be relocated to various spots across Calderdale after the event, creating a lasting legacy for the community.
