In your own time - spooky places to visit in Yorkshire

From haunted abbeys to eerie forests, here are some of the top places to experience Yorkshire’s supernatural side.

Whitby Abbey

The perched ruins of Whitby Abbey are perhaps the most iconic, famously inspiring Bram Stoker's Dracula. This Gothic remnant, high above the sea is as haunting by night as it is breathtaking by day. Lit up for Halloween, it becomes a must-visit spot for anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of its spectral legends.

Ghost tours in York

Moving inland, York is considered one of the most haunted cities in England. Its ancient cobbled streets hide countless ghost stories, particularly in spots like The Shambles and Clifford’s Tower. Visitors often book a walking tour with a guide knowledgable about the histories of the buildings.

Stay at the haunted Golden Fleece.

East Riddlesden Hall

This 400 year old hall near Keighley featured on the TV series "Most Haunted" with a reputed Grey Lady stalking the corridors! But for this half term, there's a pumpkin trail and a spooky storytelling session for children. Free for National Trust members.

Robin Hood's Grave, Mirfield

Kirklees Priory is where the historical figure known as Robin Hood reputedly died, and his resting place was supposedly nearby with a grave marker in the private woodland nearby since the 16th century. Find it on the map here.
