|Hull’s iconic aquarium, The Deep, is giving families a unique way to dive into marine conservation through special book readings of The Whale Who Disappeared by local author Emma Oldham.
Known for combining fun and learning, The Deep will host an event on 30th November that’ll let kids experience an underwater story come to life—set in front of their stunning Endless Ocean exhibit, where creatures like sharks, rays, and sea turtles swim just a glass pane away.

A story to inspire young environmentalists
This book, now available in The Deep’s own shop, “Deep-Artment,” isn’t just a story; it’s a call to action. Kids will follow the journey of Arry, a six-year-old who learns that the sperm whales near her seaside home are vanishing.
Determined to make a change, Arry rallies her community to protect the ocean. Emma Oldham, the author, shares her hope that young readers will feel inspired by Arry’s courage and learn that they’re never too small to make a big impact. "Sharing this message against the backdrop of such incredible marine life," Oldham says, “will be a memorable experience for families.”
Event highlights: book readings and an author meet-and-greet
At 11:30 am and again at 12:30 pm, families can enjoy live readings of The Whale Who Disappeared, included with their entry ticket. Sitting against the impressive aquatic landscape of The Deep’s largest exhibit, kids will listen as Arry’s story unfolds, surrounded by the captivating sights of the ocean’s most fascinating animals.
After the reading, Emma Oldham will be on hand to meet young fans, sign books, and chat about the importance of protecting the ocean. There’s also a chance to grab a plushie inspired by the book’s characters—a fun keepsake to bring home.
Why The Whale Who Disappeared fits right in at The Deep
Paul Baker, The Deep’s Retail Manager, feels the book fits perfectly with their conservation mission: “The Whale Who Disappeared tells a powerful tale about the importance of taking action for our ocean, which aligns perfectly with our charity’s mission.” This book serves as a wonderful way for children to learn about the ocean’s challenges and connect it with real-life solutions happening in places like The Deep.
For anyone planning a trip to Hull, this event is an absolute treat. Not only does it bring to life an important environmental message, but it also gives kids a chance to meet an inspiring local author and experience the wonder of The Deep in a whole new way. Book your tickets early to guarantee a spot in this underwater adventure that’s sure to make waves!
