Welcome to Yorkshire

•A recent survey has revealed that 4 in 10 homeowners in Yorkshire and the Humber are not using approved plumbers for their home plumbing needs. Conducted by the WaterSafe Register, which is the UK’s national register of approved plumbers, this finding raises concerns about the safety and quality of drinking water in the region. According to the survey, only 43% of homeowners in Yorkshire and the Humber reported that they exclusively rely on approved plumbers. This figure is notably lower than the national average of 48%, indicating that many residents may be at risk of plumbing-related issues that could affect their water quality.
Importance Of Using Approved Plumbers
Approved plumbers are professionals who have obtained recognised qualifications and are knowledgeable about the water regulations designed to protect public health. These plumbers can help prevent various plumbing problems that may lead to contamination. Some of the key benefits of hiring an approved plumber include:
Preventing Contamination: Approved plumbers are trained to follow strict regulations, which helps keep drinking water safe from harmful substances.
Avoiding Costly Leaks: Proper plumbing installation reduces the chances of leaks, which can be expensive to repair.
Maintaining Water Quality: Regular inspections and proper plumbing practices help maintain the quality of water coming from taps.
Jonathan Samuel, Managing Director of WaterSafe Register, emphasised the importance of selecting an approved plumber:
“Safe, high-quality plumbing prevents contamination, avoids costly leaks and maintains drinking water quality.”
Current Water Quality Concerns
While drinking water quality in England is generally high, with a compliance rate of 99.97% in 2024, there are still significant concerns. The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) reported that over 31% of water quality issues happened on consumer premises. These issues can be linked to various factors, including:
Improper pipework fittings
Cross-connections (where different water sources are mixed unintentionally)
The presence of lead pipes
Nickel leaching from taps and connectors
Lack of backflow protection, which prevents contaminated water from flowing back into the clean supply
These problems highlight the importance of using qualified professionals for plumbing work, as they are trained to manage these potential risks effectively.
