National Railway Museum in York to Build New Central Hall

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 18th, 2026

The National Railway Museum in York is set to undergo a major transformation with the recent signing of a contract for the construction of a new building known as Central Hall. This exciting development comes after the museum received £3 million in government funding, aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and making the museum more accessible.

Construction Begins

Graham Construction Ltd has been awarded the contract to begin the main construction work on Central Hall. This phase marks a significant step forward for the museum, which aims to create a space that unifies its various buildings and improves the overall visitor experience. The project is expected to be completed over the next two years, making it a key part of the museum's ongoing development.

A Vision for the Future

Craig Bentley, the Director of the National Railway Museum, expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Central Hall is more than a new building – it is a bold, future-facing statement that embodies the Railway Museum’s commitment to being ‘Open for All’ and sets a new sustainability benchmark for the site.” This new space is designed not just to showcase the history of railways but also to highlight future innovations in the field.

Design and Features

Central Hall is being designed by the award-winning architects Feilden Fowles. The building will serve as a central entrance to the museum, offering level access for the first time, making it easier for everyone to visit. Some of the features of Central Hall will include:

  • A new gallery space

  • Toilets

  • A café

  • A shop

These improvements aim to create a more welcoming environment for visitors, enhancing their experience as they explore the rich history of Britain’s railways.

Environmental Responsibility

One of the exciting aspects of Central Hall is its focus on sustainability. The design incorporates modern, environmentally friendly principles that respect the museum’s heritage while meeting the needs of today’s visitors. The building will feature:

  • A striking circular design clad in recycled copper

  • High, glazed ceilings with timber radials

  • Natural ventilation and carefully considered daylighting

These elements not only create a comfortable atmosphere but also reduce energy consumption, making Central Hall a model for future developments.

Community Support

Central Hall and the associated Railway Futures: The Porterbrook Gallery are being made possible through the support of various funders, including Porterbrook as the title sponsor and Mott MacDonald as a major sponsor. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of community involvement in preserving and promoting the history of railways in Britain.

Visitor Experience Enhancement

Edel Millar, the Masterplan Project Director, noted that Central Hall represents a transformative moment for the National Railway Museum. “It will create a more welcoming, accessible and intuitive experience for visitors,” she said. The new building aims to seamlessly connect the museum’s historic structures and provide improved facilities for everyone who visits.

Looking Ahead

The National Railway Museum has a long history of attracting visitors, having welcomed almost 40 million guests since it opened in 1975. With the upcoming Central Hall, the museum is poised to enhance its status as the most visited free attraction in the region. By blending the past with future innovations, the museum aims to remain a vital part of Yorkshire's cultural landscape.
