•Finding the right kind of care for a family member is one of the biggest things a person can do. It's a decision filled with emotion and a desire to find a place that feels like a proper home. For families in North Leeds, there’s some brilliant news. A brand new residential and dementia care home has just opened its doors in Adel, offering a fresh option for those needing extra support. The Adel Square Care Home, run by St Mary’s Care Homes, is now welcoming its first residents, bringing 86 much-needed beds and new jobs to the area. This new facility is designed to address the growing care needs of the local community, providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone who walks through its doors.
A bit more than just a place to live
The facilities at Adel Square are designed to make life comfortable, engaging, and enjoyable. Every resident gets their own en-suite bedroom, which is a big plus for privacy and dignity. But it’s the shared areas that really make a house a home. There are assisted bathrooms on each floor, cosy communal lounges for a good natter, and even a café for catching up with family over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. For those who love the outdoors, the home features beautifully landscaped gardens and external terraces. Imagine sitting out on a sunny afternoon, enjoying the fresh air. These communal spaces are so important for socialising and taking part in group activities, ensuring no one feels isolated. It’s these thoughtful touches that help create a warm and welcoming environment for all residents.
Designed with people in mind
This isn't just a building with rooms; it's an environment carefully crafted to help people live well, especially those with dementia. The whole home is dementia-friendly, which means a lot of clever thinking has gone into the design. For someone living with dementia, navigating a new place can be confusing. To help with this, Adel Square uses distinct colour schemes and themed areas to act as signposts. It’s a simple but incredibly effective way to support residents in finding their way around and feeling more secure. The communal spaces are varied too. There's a music lounge for a bit of a singalong, quiet lounges for reading or just relaxing, and other areas dedicated to social activities. This focus on a dementia-friendly design shows a real understanding of the specific care needs of residents, offering compassionate and practical support. The goal is to create an accessible and warm environment where every resident can feel safe and comfortable.
It’s all about the people
A building is only as good as the people inside it, and the team at Adel Square Care Home is led by some very experienced hands. The Registered Manager is Diane Atkinson, a professional with over 30 years of experience in the care sector. That’s a massive amount of knowledge and dedication. Her focus is on making sure the home runs smoothly from day one, building strong relationships with residents and their families, and ensuring the care provided is built around each person's individual needs.
Diane Atkinson, Home Manager at Adel Square Care Home, said:
“It’s a privilege to lead Adel Square as it opens and begins to welcome residents. The priority is to establish a home that feels settled and well-run from the outset, with care based around each individual and strong relationships with families.”
The vision for the home comes from Steven Davis, the CEO of St Mary’s Care Homes. He spoke about the organisation's commitment to providing top-quality residential care.
Steven Davis, CEO of St Mary’s Care Homes, said:
“Adel Square reflects our continued commitment to delivering exceptional care, combining a high-quality living environment with compassionate, person-centred support. We had a valuable discussion about the growing care needs within the local community and the important role Adel Square will play in meeting that demand. With dedicated residential and dementia care services, our team is proud to provide a safe, supportive and enriching environment for those who need it most. We’re grateful to Katie for taking the time to visit and learn more about our vision for care in Leeds, and we look forward to continuing the conversation as we support the community now and into the future.”
A big welcome from the community
The opening of the new care home has already made a positive splash in the local community. The home recently hosted a special visitor, Katie White MP OBE, who took a full tour of the new facilities. Her visit highlights the importance of this new resource for Adel and the wider Leeds area. She talked about how vital new facilities are, especially with the increasing demand for dementia care.
Katie White MP OBE said:
“With the continuous increase in care needs and the increasing demand for dementia care, new facilities in our local towns are vital to support those who need to access them. It was a pleasure to visit the impressive new Adel Square care home, creating many new local jobs in our constituency of Leeds North West. The team are really focussed on community engagement; it was great to hear more about this and their future plans as they continue to welcome new residents over the coming weeks and months.”
This kind of community engagement is a fantastic sign. It shows that the home is already building strong connections and has exciting future plans to become an integral part of the North Leeds landscape. It’s not just a care facility; it’s a new neighbour.
What's on offer?
So, what kind of care is available? Adel Square provides a range of services to meet different care needs. This includes full-time residential care for those who need ongoing support, as well as specialised dementia care. They also offer respite care, which is a great option for families who need a short break from caring for a loved one at home. Life for residents is designed to be as full and varied as possible. There is a packed programme of activities to keep everyone entertained and engaged. Alongside this, essential services like hairdressing and podiatry are available right there in the home, as well as visits from other care specialists. It’s all part of providing holistic support that looks after a person's physical, social, and emotional well-being. This comprehensive approach ensures all residents receive the attention and services they need to thrive.
Fancy a look around?
For anyone in the local community curious to see what this new home is all about, there’s a perfect opportunity coming up. Adel Square Care Home is hosting an open day on Thursday 23 April, from 10am to 2pm. What's more, the Lord Mayor is expected to pop in between 11am and 11:30am, which is a lovely touch for the grand opening. The event is open to everyone, and there’s no need to book a spot. It’s a great chance to have a proper look at the fantastic facilities, meet the team, and get a real feel for the warm and supportive environment they’ve created in Adel. It's a chance to see first-hand how this new residential home is set to support people in Leeds for years to come.
