Welcome to Yorkshire

•Community Shop Swarcliffe recently marked its first birthday with a delightful garden party, celebrating a year of supporting local families and making a significant impact in the community. This innovative social enterprise, which opened thanks to funding from Leeds-based Asda, aims to tackle food insecurity by empowering its members to build skills and create a brighter future for themselves. The event brought together community members, staff, and supporters to reflect on the achievements of the past year.
Achievements Over the Year
In just twelve months, Community Shop Swarcliffe has managed to save its members over £1 million on their shopping. This staggering amount translates to the equivalent of 956,272 meals for local households. The shop operates with a unique model that uses surplus food products that would otherwise go to waste, ensuring that families have access to affordable, quality food. The store includes three key spaces:
Community Store: Offers discounted food and essential household items, including fruit, vegetables, and bread for as little as 20p.
Community Hub: Profits from the store are reinvested here to provide vital learning and development programmes. Over 5,700 sessions have been delivered, covering skills like cooking, budgeting, and interview techniques.
Community Kitchen: A welcoming café space that serves home-cooked meals, where children eat for free every day. This kitchen has provided over 10,250 free meals to kids in the community.
Community Impact
The impact of Community Shop Swarcliffe extends beyond just food savings. It offers a “hand up, not a handout,” helping families not only to save money but also to develop skills that foster long-term resilience. Gary Stott, Executive Chairman of Community Shop, expressed pride in the achievements of the shop, stating, “We’re incredibly proud of what has been achieved at Community Shop Swarcliffe in its first year. Working together with Asda, we’ve supported thousands of families across the local community, providing dignified access to affordable food, alongside life-changing holistic programmes that empower people to build their skills, confidence and resilience.” Karen Todd, Senior Manager for Zero Waste at Asda, echoed this sentiment, saying, “We’re delighted to see the positive impact Community Shop Swarcliffe has made in just one year. It's inspiring to see how much of a difference this partnership has made in such a small space of time - helping thousands of families access affordable food while also building skills, confidence and long-term resilience.”
Membership and Accessibility
Membership at Community Shop Swarcliffe is free and open to local residents who are receiving means-tested benefits. This ensures that families in need can access the support they require without any financial barriers. The initiative aims to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and supported. The Community Shop model is a pioneering example of how surplus food can be transformed into a sustainable support system for families facing financial difficulties. By providing essential items at reduced prices, the shop not only alleviates the pressure on household budgets but also fosters community spirit and resilience.
A Bright Future Ahead
As Community Shop Swarcliffe looks to the future, the focus remains on expanding its positive impact within the community. The combination of affordable food access, skill-building programmes, and a supportive community environment sets a strong foundation for ongoing success. With continued support from partners like Asda, the shop aims to reach even more families in need, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive. The celebration of this first anniversary is not just a recognition of past achievements but also a commitment to the future. As the Community Shop continues to grow, it embodies the spirit of collaboration and community care that is so vital in today’s society.
