•The Sue Ryder Solstice Saunter has proven to be a tremendous success, raising an impressive £25,000 for the Oxenhope-based Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. This event, which took place on the longest day of the year, saw participants from all over the world come together to support a worthy cause.
Event Overview
On 23 June 2026, the Sue Ryder Solstice Saunter welcomed around 750 runners to the picturesque Bolton Abbey for a five-mile race. The event was not just limited to those attending in person; 130 additional supporters participated virtually from various locations, including some who took on their own routes in different countries. This blend of local and international involvement highlights the growing popularity of the event.
Impressive Participation
Despite the soaring temperatures on the day, participants showed remarkable spirit and determination. Among the runners, Sam Townson was the first to cross the finish line, while Oscar Fox secured the runner-up position for the second consecutive year. The event also saw a strong female presence, with Eliza Taswell-Fryer being the first woman to finish, followed closely by Lottie Senior in second place. This year, two-thirds of the participants were women, demonstrating the event's inclusive nature and appeal.
Support and Sponsorship
The event was supported by generous sponsorship from Ecology Building Society, which played a crucial role in making the Saunter happen. The involvement of local businesses and the community is vital for events like this, as it not only raises funds for essential services but also fosters a sense of togetherness and support among residents.
Quotes from Organisers
Andrew Wood, Senior Regional Fundraiser at Sue Ryder, expressed his gratitude, saying, “It’s been incredible to see the Sue Ryder Solstice Saunter grow into a global show of support for Sue Ryder. Every participant helped us raise money so we can continue to be there when it matters most. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, our fantastic volunteers, generous sponsors, and of course, Race Director David Senior for bringing it all together.”
Impact of the Funds Raised
The £25,000 raised will go a long way in supporting the vital services provided by Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. This hospice plays an essential role in the community, offering care to those facing terminal illness and providing support to their families during difficult times. In the past year alone, Sue Ryder has delivered over 655,000 hours of care, allowing countless individuals to receive the support they need.

For those looking to support Sue Ryder further, there are many ways to get involved. Whether it’s participating in future events, volunteering, or making a donation, every little bit helps. More information can be found on their website: www.sueryder.org/get-involved.
