Welcome to Yorkshire
News • June 26th, 2026
|Fulford Cemetery in York has seen a wave of community spirit as dedicated volunteers work hard to keep the grounds tidy and welcoming. Since the City of York Council took over the management of the cemetery in August 2025, these volunteers have been instrumental in maintaining the site and preparing for its future. Discussions about how the cemetery will be managed going forward have been taking place, with the council's Executive set to make a decision on 7 July 2026.
Volunteer Efforts Make a Difference
Volunteers have been a vital part of the ongoing care for Fulford Cemetery, which serves as a burial site for both local residents and those from further afield. The cemetery includes options for green burials and has specific provisions for war graves. Previously managed by Fulford Parish Council since 1968, the cemetery has now come under the temporary management of the City of York Council, leading to a renewed focus on its upkeep.
Throughout the past year, volunteers from various backgrounds have gathered at the cemetery to lend a hand. These efforts have included:
Weeding and edging flower beds
Clearing leaves and debris
Maintaining benches and pathways
General maintenance to enhance the cemetery's appearance
Regular volunteer sessions take place every second Monday of the month from 10am to 1pm. Local residents, staff from Stay City, and groups like Good Gym have all contributed to these efforts, showing that community involvement can truly make a difference.
Future Management Discussions
The future of Fulford Cemetery was a key topic at a meeting of the Corporate Scrutiny Committee on 22 June 2026. The committee discussed various proposals, including making the City of York Council's management of the cemetery permanent. This decision will be crucial for the cemetery's ongoing maintenance and development, and it is expected that the Executive will announce their decision on 7 July.
Cllr Katie Lomas, who serves as the Executive Member for Finance, Performance, Major Projects, Human Rights, Equality, and Inclusion at the City of York Council, expressed gratitude towards the volunteers:
“So many volunteers have kindly rolled up their sleeves and given time to support the cemetery, which is really appreciated. Their work has really improved this much-visited site, and helped make it a welcoming and comforting space for those with loved ones buried there.”
How to Get Involved
With ongoing maintenance required, the cemetery is always looking for more helping hands. Volunteers are encouraged to join the regular sessions or participate in special events aimed at enhancing the cemetery. The work may be hard, but it is rewarding, providing a space that offers comfort to families visiting their loved ones.

A Community Legacy
Fulford Cemetery not only serves as a resting place but also as a reminder of the history and community spirit in York. The involvement of local volunteers reflects a strong commitment to preserving the area for future generations. As discussions continue about its management, the support from the community will be essential in ensuring that the cemetery remains a well-maintained and cherished site.
As the council prepares to make a decision on the cemetery's future, the efforts of the volunteers highlight just how important community involvement can be in maintaining public spaces. The outcome of the council meeting on 7 July will determine how Fulford Cemetery will continue to be cared for, but for now, the community’s dedication shines brightly through its ongoing work.
