Acomb Residents Enjoy Quieter Neighbourhood After Council Takes Action Against Noisy Holiday Let

Residents in Acomb can finally enjoy a quieter neighbourhood after the City of York Council took action against a holiday let that had become a noisy party house. Following multiple complaints from neighbours, the council stepped in to address the late-night disturbances, which included loud music and rowdy gatherings.

Complaints From Neighbours

In recent months, neighbours had reported excessive noise coming from a short-term rental property in Acomb. The complaints described large groups of guests partying, playing loud music, shouting, and even using an outdoor hot tub well into the night. The noise was so disruptive that it affected local residents' sleep and peace at home.

Each time a complaint was lodged, the council sent warning letters to the owner, which resulted in a temporary reduction in noise. However, this did not last long, and by April 2026, the situation escalated again. The Council's Noise Patrol was called to the property late one night, at approximately 11.30pm, to investigate the ongoing disturbances.

Council's Response

When the officers arrived, they discovered a large group of women partying in the hot tub, accompanied by loud music and shouting. The situation became tense as some guests reacted aggressively when asked to lower the noise. Another complaint was received around 12.30am that same night, highlighting the ongoing issues.

On 1 May 2026, the council issued a noise abatement notice to the owner of the property. This legal document required the owner to take immediate action to stop the loud noise and ensure that their guests were not causing further disturbances.

Owner Takes Action

Responding quickly to the notice, the owner of the holiday let took significant measures to address the noise issue. They decided to decommission the hot tub, which was a major source of the noise, and also reduced the number of guests allowed to stay at the property. Since these changes were implemented, no further complaints have been reported.

Community Support and Council's Commitment

Cllr Michael Pavlovic, who serves as the Executive Member for Safer Communities at the City of York Council, expressed his support for the residents and highlighted the importance of maintaining peace in neighbourhoods:

"We welcome the fact that people want to come and enjoy our beautiful city, and we know that holiday lets have a role to play in York's visitor economy. However, nobody should have to put up with repeated late-night noise and disruption in the place they call home."

He further acknowledged the hard work of the Environmental Protection and Noise Patrol teams for their dedication in resolving the issue.
