Glasgow Central Station Update: Full Platform Access to Resume From Wednesday 25 March

Anyone who’s had to catch a train recently from Glasgow Central Station knows things have been a bit different. It can be a real pain when your usual platform is out of action, a bit like when your favourite route to school is blocked off and you have to find a new way. But there’s some brilliant news on the horizon for travellers. Things are set to get back on track, quite literally, as an announcement confirms that full platform access is about to be restored. From Wednesday 25 March, passengers using services from operators like TransPennine Express will see a big return to normality at the station.

What's actually been going on at Glasgow Central?

So, what was all the disruption about? It wasn't actually an issue with the station itself, but with a building right next door. A neighbouring building was damaged by a fire, and for everyone's safety, it needed to be worked on. The Glasgow City Council organised the necessary demolition work to make the area safe again. This important safety work meant that parts of Glasgow Central Station, specifically the high-level concourse, had to have access restrictions in place. Because this concourse area was so close to the fire-damaged building, parts of it had to be closed off to the public. This had a knock-on effect, meaning some of the high-level platforms couldn't be used either, which has been a bit of a headache for train operators and passengers over the last few days.

The good news: platforms are reopening!

And now for the update everyone has been waiting for. Network Rail, the organisation that looks after the country's railway infrastructure (the tracks, the signals, and the big stations), has given the green light. They’ve confirmed that from Wednesday 25 March, platforms 1–6 will officially reopen. This is a big deal because it means that all the high-level platforms at Glasgow Central Station will be back in business. This means that all train services by all operators, including the popular TransPennine Express routes, can get back to their normal schedules and platform arrangements. The progress on the demolition work next door means the restricted area has been reduced, allowing full access to be restored. This is fantastic news for anyone planning a journey, as it should make travelling through the station much simpler.

So, is everything completely back to normal?

Almost! Whilst the main disruption is over, things won't be 100% back to the way they were just yet. A small exclusion zone is going to remain in place on a section of the high-level concourse. It’s nothing to worry about and won't stop the trains. This small area needs to stay closed off while the final remediation work continues. The most important thing is that this small exclusion zone won't affect access to the high-level platforms, so the train services themselves should be running smoothly from Wednesday 25 March. The station will continue to keep people updated with any further details about the station arrangements as they become available.

What this means for your journey

The long and short of it is that journeys through Glasgow Central Station are about to get a lot easier. For anyone travelling on or after Wednesday 25 March, the reopening of platforms 1–6 means a more predictable and smoother experience. It shows how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep people safe and the country moving. When something unexpected like a fire in a neighbouring building happens, it takes a huge coordinated effort between organisations like Network Rail and Glasgow City Council to manage the situation safely. The restoration of full access to the high-level platforms is a massive step in the right direction. It means more reliability for services from all operators, and passengers on TransPennine Express and other lines can look forward to a much more normal journey. The station will feel a lot more like its usual busy, bustling self very soon.
