Welcome to Yorkshire

•New research from Airbnb highlights a troubling trend affecting families in Yorkshire and across the UK: rising costs are making summer holidays increasingly unaffordable. This situation, often referred to as the UK's "holiday gap," has left many families feeling the financial strain and reconsidering their holiday plans. As the summer season approaches, many parents are finding themselves cutting back on everyday expenses and relying on help from relatives just to afford a family getaway.
Financial Pressures Affecting Yorkshire Families
The findings from Airbnb's research reveal that over a quarter (27%) of families in the UK do not have a summer holiday booked this year. The main reasons cited for this are the high cost of living and travel expenses. In Yorkshire and Humber, the survey results show a similar pattern, with many families feeling the pinch:
More than three-quarters (76%) of families are worried about rising travel and accommodation costs impacting their holiday plans.
Over half (55%) have reduced how often they eat out as a family to save for a holiday.
One in three families (33%) have turned to extended family members for financial support to help cover holiday costs.
More than a third (36%) are unsure if they will be able to afford a family holiday in the next 12 months.
One in five (21%) have cut back on everyday essentials like groceries and transport to fund a break.
This research indicates that many families are facing tough choices as they try to balance their budgets while still wanting to create cherished holiday memories.
Changing Travel Habits
The financial pressures are not just affecting whether families can go on holiday; they are also changing how families travel. Nearly one in five (19%) families reported cancelling a holiday abroad in the past six months due to concerns about costs. Conversely, searches for domestic stays in the UK have surged, increasing by over 11% year-on-year, with a 15% rise during the May Bank Holidays. This suggests that families are looking for more affordable options closer to home. For those who have managed to book a holiday, the worries don’t stop there. A significant 71% of families with a holiday planned are anxious about the costs involved. Many have had to dip into their savings or rely on help from family members. In fact, over two-thirds (66%) said they would have cancelled their upcoming holiday if prices had increased by more than £100.
Support for Families in Need
Recognising the challenges families face, Airbnb has partnered with The Family Holiday Charity, donating nearly £300,000 to support families in need. This partnership has helped over 300 families take their first-ever holiday this year, aiming to bridge the holiday gap and make travel more accessible. Lisa Marçais, General Manager for UKI, Northern Europe, and MEA at Airbnb, emphasised the importance of family holidays:
“Family holidays are about much more than time away; they’re an opportunity to reconnect, improve wellbeing, create invaluable memories, and have new experiences together. But for too many families in the UK, rising costs mean that even a short break is out of reach.”
The Family Holiday Charity assists families facing financial difficulties, many of whom have never had the chance to take a holiday together. By providing the opportunity for a break, the charity aims to offer families a chance to escape daily struggles and enjoy quality time together.
The Impact of Holidays on Wellbeing
The benefits of taking a holiday extend beyond just having fun. The research shows that spending quality time together (65%), creating lasting memories (56%), and giving children new experiences (48%) are the top reasons families believe holidays are important. Children also value these experiences, ranking time with family (71%), fun activities (59%), and making memories (58%) as key reasons for wanting a holiday.
Lynsey, a mother from Newcastle, shared her experience of taking her first family holiday through the support of Airbnb and The Family Holiday Charity:
“Before this trip, we’d never been able to go on holiday as a family. It was something we’d always wanted to do, but it just wasn’t realistic for us financially. The opportunity to take a break together was so special, and the memories we made will stay with us for a long time.”
Rob Parkinson, CEO of The Family Holiday Charity, expressed the charity's mission:
“As a charity, our central mission is to support families facing tough times to experience the many benefits of time away together. Collaborating with industry and policy-makers is essential if we are to drive the transformative change we believe can alter the life chances of families throughout the UK.”
The increasing costs of holidays pose a significant challenge for families, but initiatives like Airbnb's partnership with The Family Holiday Charity offer hope. By working together, both organisations aim to make holiday experiences more accessible for families in need and ensure that everyone can enjoy the benefits of spending quality time together.
