Pontefract Buttercross was erected in 1734 to protect the country women who came into town to sell dairy products from the elements. Solomon dupier left £150 for the building of it after his wife and three daughters contracted small pox making a vow if they were spared he would build it. It has survived in remarkable condition and is worth seeing.
What a fantastic building in the centre of Pontefract. There was a market inside and outside selling a great variety of products. There is seating but not enough. I will definitely go again.
