Wow. First time in England and my 3rd stay in a land mark trust location. Super clean, rich with history, and outright beautiful views no matter what time of day. Having trouble acclimating to the time difference from the states, I’d often spend my time staring straight out to Richmond castle from my bed. Illuminated by the moon and loosing track of time just staring. It’s a must stay and a great experience.
Nice walk up through the gate. Shame it's let out, as it would be lovely to have a nosey inside! Good views too
I was going to visit Richmond Castle, but found it was closed due to staff shortage…. So I visited Culloden Tower instead. An interesting place, a folly, built to celebrate victory at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. You can’t go up inside the Tower (although it can be rented as a holiday let, run by The Landmark Trust!). Even so the views over to Richmond Castle are worth the climb up the hill on which the Tower sits. Other land around there is mostly private. The entrance is through some iron gates in Cravengate, next to a small car park. There is no entrance fee, it is open to the public. After the Tower it’s worth walking to the wonderful Richmond Falls about 10 minutes away along the River Swale.
We stayed here for 3 nights through the Landmark Trust. It was amazing! We wished we could have stayed longer.
Didn't actually visit the tower. Seen and photographed from the Castle Walk. It's the usual Victorian Foly. Some ppl back in the day had nowt better to do with their wealth......
