Ever feel like your brain has too many tabs open? Between phone notifications, homework, and just... life, it’s easy to feel a bit frazzled. But picture this: a place where you can switch off, chat with your mates or family, and actually make something cool with your hands. Well, that’s exactly what’s coming to Skipton. A brand-new creative space called Craft Social is opening its doors, and it’s all about swapping screen time for some good old-fashioned hands-on creativity. It's a spot designed for anyone and everyone looking for a bit of slow living and a more meaningful way to connect.

From a travelling workshop to a permanent home

This whole brilliant idea comes from two friends from Ilkley, Sophie and Becky, the creative founders behind Craft Social. With backgrounds in illustration and design, they're the perfect duo to start something like this. Their journey actually began back in 2024, when they launched Craft Social as a mobile craft workshop. They travelled all over Yorkshire, bringing their passion for creativity to private events and parties. They quickly saw how much people loved it – the joy of making something new, the laughter, and the genuine connections happening when phones were put away. After a super successful first year, they realised the next logical step was to create a permanent home for their project, a proper creative hub where the community could come together anytime. And so, they found the perfect spot on Newmarket Street in Skipton to build their dream.

What's the crafty experience all about?

So, what actually happens at Craft Social? The main rule is simple: it’s a proudly screen-free zone. The whole point is to offer a mindful escape where people can step away from the digital noise and get lost in a proper crafty experience. Whether you’re a total beginner or a bit of an art whiz, there’s something for you. Visitors can pop in for a session of painting, try their hand at intricate beading, or even experiment with spray painting to create their own unique masterpiece. The aim is to make creativity accessible for everyone, especially families looking for a different kind of day out.

There are a few different ways to get involved, making it super flexible:

  • Walk-ins and Standard Bookings: Fancy a spontaneous burst of creativity? You can just turn up or book a slot to use the creative space and materials.

  • Workshops: For those who want a bit more guidance, there will be regular in-house workshops starting from just £10 per person. These are perfect for learning a new skill.

  • Private Parties: Got a birthday or special occasion coming up? Craft Social offers private hire for parties, turning any celebration into a fun, creative event.

  • Craft Kits: If you love the idea but fancy getting creative at home, they’ll also have pre-prepared craft kits to buy from just £5. They make great gifts, too!

A creative hub for the whole community

Craft Social isn’t just a café that offers a craft or two; it’s being built as a real community anchor. A core part of its mission is to be a creative hub for the whole area. Sophie and Becky are passionate about collaborating with other local creatives, offering them a space within the café to showcase and sell their work. They even plan to let other artists hire the venue to host their own events and workshops, building a network of creativity in Skipton. This community focus extends to the café side of things, too. Visitors can look forward to a delicious range of baked goodies and refreshments, which will be sourced from local suppliers wherever possible. It’s all part of their commitment to supporting the local economy and making Craft Social a place that truly belongs to the community.

Putting down phones and picking up a paintbrush

The whole philosophy behind Craft Social is something called ‘slow living’. It sounds a bit fancy, but it’s actually a really simple idea. It’s about taking a step back from the rush, being present in the moment, and finding joy in simple, tangible things. It’s that feeling you get when you’re so focused on what you’re doing – whether it's painting, beading, or just chatting – that you completely forget to check your phone. This focus on screen-free connection is what makes the experience so special. It encourages real conversations and shared moments, creating a space where families and friends can genuinely connect without digital distractions. It’s a chance to make memories as well as masterpieces in a wonderfully calm and welcoming new creative space. This commitment to a meaningful, hands-on experience is at the core of their design and vision.

How to get involved

Fancy a look? The community is invited to get a sneak peek of the newly refurbished space. Craft Social is hosting a soft launch event on Saturday, 28th March 2026, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Anyone can pop into the café at 24a Newmarket Street to say hello, check out the place, and enjoy some complimentary drinks. There will also be a chance to try out some of the creative activities on offer. After the launch, the café will officially open its doors on Wednesday, 1st April, and will be open Wednesday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 4 pm.
