Welcome to Yorkshire

|Access to cash has become a real headache in many parts of the UK, especially with bank branches closing left, right, and centre. But for people in South Elmsall, there’s some good news—a new banking hub has just opened in the Westfield Centre, offering a way for locals to withdraw and deposit cash, pay bills, and even speak to a representative from their bank on specific days.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new hub, including what services it offers, when your bank will be available, and what this means for other communities in West Yorkshire.

What is the South Elmsall banking hub?
The South Elmsall Banking Hub is a shared banking space designed to provide essential financial services to the community. It’s run by Cash Access UK, a not-for-profit group set up by major banks to make sure people can still access cash when they need it.
Here’s what you’ll find at the hub:
- A counter service, operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks can carry out regular transactions like cash withdrawals, deposits, and bill payments.
- A Community Banker service, where customers can speak to a representative from their own bank about more complex issues—like setting up payments, discussing loans, or dealing with account problems.
The hub is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, and here’s when different banks will have a representative available:
- Monday: Halifax (coming soon)
- Tuesday: HSBC
- Wednesday: Barclays
- Thursday: NatWest
- Friday: Lloyds (coming soon)
If you just need to withdraw or deposit money, you can use the Post Office counter any day of the week.
Why are banking hubs opening now?
It’s true that fewer people are using cash these days, but it’s still vital for millions of people. According to recent figures, 5 to 6 million adults in the UK rely on cash daily. This includes older residents, people who prefer cash budgeting, and small business owners who deal in physical money.
With bank branches shutting down across the country, hubs like this one make sure that people who still need face-to-face banking aren’t left behind.
Will South Elmsall’s hub be permanent?
Right now, the hub is in a temporary location at:
📍 Westfield Centre, 26 Westfield Ln, South Elmsall, Pontefract WF9 2PU
Cash Access UK has said they’re working on finding a long-term home for the hub, but it will continue offering the same services in the meantime.
More banking hubs coming to West Yorkshire
South Elmsall’s hub is the seventh banking hub to open in West Yorkshire, and it won’t be the last. Four more hubs are planned for:
✅ Armley
✅ Horsforth
✅ Normanton
✅ Wetherby
These hubs will help ensure that communities across the region still have access to in-person banking, even as traditional branches close down.
Who is behind Cash Access UK?
The group running these hubs, Cash Access UK, is backed by major banks including:
- Barclays
- HSBC UK
- Lloyds Banking Group
- NatWest Group
- Santander
- TSB
- Virgin Money
Essentially, these banks have teamed up to make sure their customers can still access essential banking services, even if their local branch has shut.
Can small businesses use the banking hub?
Yes! If you run a small business, you can use the hub for:
💷 Cash withdrawals
🏦 Depositing cash and cheques
🪙 Ordering floats and coinage
This is a huge help for local shops, market traders, and other businesses that still deal in cash daily.
How are banking hubs chosen?
Ever wondered how they decide where to open these hubs? It’s all handled by LINK, the UK’s cash machine network.
Here’s how it works:
1️⃣ When a bank branch closes, LINK assesses whether a hub is needed in that area.
2️⃣ If a community feels they need better access to cash, they can request an assessment from LINK.
3️⃣ If LINK decides a hub is needed, Cash Access UK steps in to make it happen.
Final thoughts
For South Elmsall residents, this new banking hub is a lifeline, especially for those who rely on cash or need in-person banking support. And with more hubs planned for West Yorkshire, access to banking is slowly improving for communities that need it most.
