The Toby Carvery at Hopgrove is great place for a meal. There is plenty of choice on the menu, but we opted for the Carvery. There was a choice of five meats and a good selection of vegetables. Everything was very nice and great value, service was very quick and efficient and the staff are very friendly.

Traveled up to York from the Midlands. Wasn’t our first visit to the Toby Carvery chain. As expected the carvery was very good. Usual choices of meat available, beef, turkey, gammon and pork, along with the much as you can eat vegetables. We had to wait 10 minutes or so for the fresh meat and vegetables to arrive and it was definitely worth it. It would have been unforgivable not to have a giant Yorkshire pudding whilst visiting York. Maybe it’s just me but I genuinely believe it tasted better than any other Yorkshire puddings that I’ve had. A wide choice of other popular pub dishes also available from the regular menu. Had to finish off with the popular Apple Pie and hot custard. Simply delicious. Great service from Tom and the team. Extremely polite and courteous. Atmosphere was busy as expected. The place however, could do with a lick of paint just to spruce up the rustic look and feel.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn Express next door and went to the Toby Carvery for dinner. Despite a written request asking to be shown to our seats, we waited an absurd amount of time before anyone appeared. Eventually, we were seated, then waited again before a second staff member came to take our drinks order and confirm we were there for the carvery. The queue for food was long—mainly because there was no one serving. After more waiting, the same staff member shouted into the kitchen for help. Eventually, a man wearing the largest chef’s hat I’ve ever seen emerged, took one look at the queue, and promptly vanished. He was replaced by another who finally began serving. The food itself was passable but bland and underseasoned—adequate if you’re hungry but hardly worth the price. The carvery area was a mess: empty vegetable bowls, mashed potatoes mixed with peas and carrots, food spread all over the place. In short, general chaos and filth. If this is what front-of-house looks like, I can't bear to imagine what the state of the kitchen would be. The one saving grace was a fresh batch of roast potatoes arriving mid-wait. In short: minimal staff who didn't work, poor organisation, and a shocking lack of attention from the kitchen. The lone server seemed to be doing everything while the rest appeared to be asleep in the back. Whoever made the roasties deserves a medal; the chef in the big hat, perhaps not so much. Overall: A dismal experience I won’t be repeating. If anyone from Toby corporate is reading this, then I can say with confidence that this establishment needs work. The team, if you can call them that, working here are a train-wreck and whoevers managing this place shouldn't be in food service.

Very friendly and helpful staff, but we were put in the Constantine Room which was like a sauna with no ventilation.

Came here for the carvery with limited other options for eating out, and definitely too tired to be cooking for myself after a full day out exploring. Up to a point they provided what I was looking for. Mostly hot food and plenty of it. Quantity did not necessarily equal quality though, and no one food choice really stood out as being particularly good or bad. In theory I could have gone up for unlimited vegetables, but in practice did I really want to stand in line for another 20 minutes just to feel like livestock being herded in front of a trough. Probably not. Come here for the convenience, but don't expect to be blown away by the quality of the food or the ambience of the place.
