The foundation of a show jumping empire

The Whitaker family's rise to prominence in international show jumping began with John Whitaker, a silver medallist at the 1984 Olympic Games, and his brother Michael. Both were introduced to the sport by their father, Donald, who played a pivotal role in their early development. Over the years, this passion for horses and show jumping has spread throughout the family, with approximately 15 members now competing at the elite level.

What sets the Whitakers apart is not just their success but the sheer number of family members who have reached the pinnacle of the sport. Few, if any, other sporting families boast such a vast network of Olympians and world medallists. It is a testament to the unique combination of nature and nurture that has propelled the Whitakers to the top.

A blend of nature and nurture

John Whitaker, now 69, reflects on the family’s enduring success:

“I think it's a bit of nature and nurture. Myself and Michael started it off all those years ago, and the kids have followed on. The thing is, they're all good and interested in it. They're all keen, which is amazing."

This interest and enthusiasm for the sport have led each family member to develop their own unique style while maintaining a connection to the family’s foundational techniques. This blend of individualism and shared experience has helped the Whitakers stay ahead in a highly competitive sport.

The next generation: Jack Whitaker

The latest rising star in the Whitaker dynasty is Jack Whitaker, the 22-year-old son of Michael. Growing up surrounded by the sport, Jack has already made a name for himself with a Youth Olympic silver medal and a Youth European Championship silver to his credit. His achievements are a clear indication that the Whitaker legacy is set to continue.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Jack says,

"Watching John and my dad when I was young, I would go to all the shows as a kid, and it's honestly very hard not to enjoy it when you go to the shows and get to see all the good parts of it. It’s a massive thing to watch them winning, and it gets instilled into you."

Unlike some families where children might feel pressured to follow in their parents' footsteps, the Whitakers have taken a more relaxed approach.

"We were never forced into it," Jack explains. "My sisters are the only two of age that don't ride. The door was just left open, and I did it, and they didn’t. But we're all keen for the horses and the sport."

Competing on the global stage: The Longines Global Champions Tour

The Whitaker family continues to be a prominent presence on the Longines Global Champions Tour, one of the most prestigious events in the show jumping calendar. Family members John, Robert, Donald, and Jack were all present at the London leg of the 2024 season, held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

The Longines Global Champions Tour is a 16-stage event that attracts the best riders and horses from around the globe. The tour culminates in a final showdown in Riyadh, offering a fitting end to a season filled with high-stakes competition.

"The prize money is very big, and it's always a good atmosphere. We always enjoy it,"

says Robert Whitaker, highlighting the event's significance in promoting the sport of show jumping. John Whitaker adds,

"This is fantastic, and it's taken the sport to another level with the venues and the atmosphere that it builds."

The tour's London leg, set against the grandeur of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, provides a spectacular backdrop that enhances the experience for both riders and spectators. Such iconic venues not only elevate the sport but also help to maintain its popularity and appeal.

The legacy continues

As the Whitaker family continues to compete at the highest levels, their story serves as an inspiration to aspiring show jumpers around the world. With each new generation, the Whitaker name continues to represent excellence, dedication, and a passion for show jumping that shows no signs of waning. The family’s ability to adapt, innovate, and inspire makes them a true dynasty in the world of sports.
