|Wakefield Council is shining a spotlight on the important role of Shared Lives carers during Shared Lives Week 2026, taking place from 15 to 21 June. This special week celebrates those who open their homes and hearts to adults needing extra support, and this year’s theme is ‘Care worth talking about’. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the Shared Lives scheme and encourage more people to consider becoming carers.
What Is Shared Lives?
Shared Lives is a unique support service where individuals, known as Shared Lives carers, provide care and companionship to adults aged 17 and over. This includes those with learning disabilities, physical impairments, or young people transitioning from foster care. It’s similar to fostering but focuses on adults, allowing them to live in a family environment. Carers can offer support on a full-time basis, for short stays, or even just for day respite.
Raph, a dedicated Shared Lives carer from Wakefield, has been actively promoting the scheme alongside Billy, the adult he supports. They recently appeared on Rhubarb Radio to share their experiences and discuss the positive impact of the programme on their lives. Raph initially provided Billy with respite care, and now Billy has moved in permanently, showcasing the deep bond they have formed.
Why Shared Lives Matters
The contributions of Shared Lives carers are invaluable to the community. According to Cllr Ansar Hayat, the Cabinet Member for Adults and Health,
“Providing the best possible care for people in our district is so important. Shared Lives is a great scheme; it’s a rewarding role for carers which makes a real difference in the lives of the adults they support.”
Shared Lives carers help individuals develop new skills, gain independence, and build confidence in a loving home environment. Raph and Billy have shared stories about the activities they enjoy together, highlighting how meaningful and enriching their relationship has become since Billy moved in.
Current Statistics and Opportunities
Wakefield currently has 52 Shared Lives carer households, comprising 85 individual carers. The council is actively seeking to recruit more people to join the scheme. This initiative not only supports those in need but also offers a rewarding experience for the carers themselves.
Carers earn a steady income with generous tax breaks.
Flexible working hours allow carers to tailor their schedules around their lives.
Full training and ongoing support from a dedicated team ensure that carers feel confident in their roles.
