Big news for Wakefield! The city centre is set to get a shiny new hotel, which is a pretty big deal for anyone who lives in or loves visiting the city. On 26 February 2026, Wakefield Council announced they’ve teamed up with developers to make it happen. This isn't just about having another place for people to stay; it's a key piece of the puzzle in the ongoing regeneration of Wakefield, aiming to create more jobs and make the city an even better place for visitors and the local community. The plan is to build on the old Westgate Station site, right next to the train station, making it super convenient for travellers.

A brand new hotel for a growing city

So, what’s the plan? Wakefield Council has officially brought ION Developments on board to build a brand-new hotel right in the city centre. This is a significant move to support the area's economic growth. The hotel is planned to have at least 110 guest rooms, and while the exact name is still under wraps, a major brand is expected to be announced soon. It’s a direct response to the increasing number of people coming to Wakefield, whether for business or to check out all the cool attractions.

The location couldn't be better. It will be built on the site of the former Old Westgate Station, literally a stone's throw from Wakefield Westgate rail station. Think about it – you hop off the train and your hotel is right there. This kind of modern infrastructure is exactly what a growing city needs. For years, people have talked about the need for more accommodation, especially when big events are on. This new hotel aims to solve that problem, giving visitors a great base to explore everything the city has to offer.

Why Wakefield is buzzing with visitors

It’s no secret that Wakefield has become a bit of a hotspot. The city has a lively cultural scene, fantastic transport links, and some seriously important historical sites. Events like the famous Rhubarb Festival and the winter Light Up pull in huge crowds every year, and it’s easy to see why. The number of visitors to the district shot up by nearly 10% in 2024, with over ten million people stopping by.

Cllr Jack Hemingway, who is the Deputy Leader of Wakefield Council and in charge of Regeneration and Economic Growth, explained it well:

“Wakefield’s got so much to offer - great transport links, nationally significant historical sites, and a lively cultural scene. Big annual events like the Rhubarb Festival and the winter Light Up bring even more people into the city. With the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Hepworth Wakefield and Theatre Royal to Wakefield Exchange and Tileyard North, there is always something happening here and reasons to visit from far afield. That’s why we want to give people the opportunity to stay for longer and enjoy everything Wakefield has to offer. So, this announcement is a big step forward for the city’s growth. It will help create new jobs and bring more people into Wakefield, which is great news for business and the local economy.”

The fantastic attractions in and around the city, like the world-renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the award-winning Hepworth Wakefield gallery, are major draws. These places aren't just local gems; they attract visitors from all over the country and beyond, reinforcing the need for quality accommodation.

More than just bricks and mortar

This hotel project isn't just about putting up a new building. The developers, ION Developments, have a great track record, with over 30 years of experience in urban regeneration projects in places like Liverpool and Denbighshire. They understand how to create spaces that feel part of the community. Because the hotel will be in a conservation area, a lot of thought is going into the design. The goal is for the new building to complement the beautiful historic architecture that Wakefield is known for, not clash with it.

A big part of the plan involves creating lots of lovely green spaces around the hotel. This will make the whole area feel more inviting and pleasant to walk through, improving the gateway to the city centre. It’s all about enhancing the look and feel of the neighbourhood for everyone. A development like this supports the whole city's infrastructure.

Steve Parry, the Managing Director of ION Developments, said:

“We are pleased and excited to have been selected by Wakefield Council to work in partnership for the delivery of this important project, which will contribute to the renaissance of the city centre by supporting the growth of the visitor economy and providing essential infrastructure for local businesses. The setting of the hotel will be enhanced by our plans to integrate it with the surrounding historic buildings and new green spaces, providing a characterful environment in an excellent location with close proximity to the station, existing car parks and town centre. We are looking forward to working with the Council to deliver the hotel, maximising its social and economic impact and contributing to the city’s future growth."

Part of a much bigger picture

This new hotel is just one piece of a much larger vision for Wakefield's regeneration. It’s one of three major projects backed by government money from the Town Deal fund, with up to £8 million helping to make the hotel a reality. This isn’t just a council project; it's a sign of a major investment in the city's future. The construction itself will create much-needed jobs.

What are the other projects? Well, the square in front of the magnificent Cathedral is getting a complete makeover to become a more welcoming public space. On top of that, the Kirkgate area is also set for regeneration with new, modern housing. Together, these projects are designed to breathe new life into the city centre, creating a stronger and more vibrant community for everyone who lives and works there.

As Cllr Hemingway added:

“Given the rise in visitor numbers to our district, we need to make sure our infrastructure is ready for this growth and that visitors feel welcome. This is more than just a development - it's part of a bold, government-backed vision to reshape Wakefield. The Westgate site is one of three exciting Town Deal projects bringing new life to the city. Alongside it, the square in front of the Cathedral is set to be transformed, and Kirkgate will be regenerated with new modern housing, creating fresh opportunities and a stronger community.”

While the final designs are still being worked on, the first artist's impressions give a glimpse of how brilliant the area could look. If all goes to plan and planning permission is granted, construction is expected to kick off in 2027. It’s a long-term plan, but one that promises a fantastic future for Wakefield.
