Welcome to Yorkshire
York is set to welcome the legendary band Sparks for a special performance at the York Barbican on Tuesday 25 August, marking their first show in the city since 1974. This exciting concert is part of a broader tour that includes stops in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and various locations across the UK and Europe throughout the summer.
Special Return to York
The upcoming concert at York Barbican is particularly significant as it signifies Sparks' return to the city after an astonishing 49 years. Fans of the band can expect a career-spanning show that promises to deliver a mix of their classic hits and new material. This performance has been added to the tour due to popular demand, alongside additional dates in Southend-on-Sea.
Acclaimed Tour and New Music
Sparks has recently gained renewed attention following the release of their critically acclaimed 28th studio album, MAD!, along with its companion EP, MADDER!. Their world tour in 2025 has garnered rave reviews, with publications praising their energetic performances. For instance, Louder Than War described their shows as “a hundred minutes of energetic, thrilling pop songs,” while The Spectator called the performances “an unadulterated triumph.” The Scotsman also lauded the Mael brothers, stating that they “take fans to heaven and back.”
Influential Legacy

Since bursting onto the music scene in 1974 with their hit single “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both of Us,” Sparks has been at the forefront of pop music. Brothers Ron and Russell Mael have created numerous musical genres and have inspired countless artists over the decades. Their influence is widely acknowledged, with super-producer Jack Antonoff stating that “all pop music is re-arranged Sparks.” Their contributions to the music industry have earned them a reputation as “your favourite band’s favourite band,” featuring prominently in Edgar Wright’s film, The Sparks Brothers.
Upcoming Tour Dates
In addition to their much-anticipated performance in York, Sparks will also be featured at the Green Man Festival and will perform as special guests of Gorillaz at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The band has recently made appearances on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, where they performed their collaboration with Gorillaz titled “The Happy Dictator.” This track is part of Gorillaz’ latest album, The Mountain.
