|This summer, families are invited to experience a unique adventure at the National Railway Museum in York, with a brand new programme running from 20 July to 6 September. The museum is set to transform into a vibrant summer holiday destination, offering a range of free activities designed for all ages. Visitors can collect a special Summer Holiday Passport upon arrival, which will guide them through exciting experiences without ever needing to leave the museum grounds.

The programme is packed with hands-on activities that encourage imagination and exploration. Families can embark on a journey through the countryside, enjoy the fun of the seaside, and even travel to different countries—all from the comfort of the museum.

She added that the museum aims to provide a unique experience for families who may choose to holiday in the UK this summer.
Interactive Experiences
Upon entering the museum, young adventurers can start their holiday at the interactive ticket office. Here, children can:
Dress up as railway staff
Sell tickets and sort lost luggage
Make their own announcements over the station Tannoy® system
This interactive start sets the stage for a day filled with exploration and creativity. After the ticket office, families can venture into the countryside area, where there are plenty of activities to enjoy, including:
Birdwatching
A countryside market featuring local produce
Sketching the beautiful scenery
Seaside Fun
For those dreaming of a classic British seaside experience, the museum offers creative activities like designing and crafting a Punch and Judy puppet show or a traditional carousel that visitors can take home as a holiday souvenir. These activities not only spark creativity but also provide a tangible memory of the day.
Special Events Throughout August
Giant Track Layout – Great Hall, 3–5 August: Mini engineers can build their own train layouts using various track pieces and motorised trains.
Immersive Storytelling in the Shinkansen – Great Hall, 11–13 August: Visitors can step aboard the preserved Japanese bullet train to enjoy a unique storytelling adventure.
Punch and Judy Shows – South Yard/Station Hall, 18, 21, and 25 August: Families can enjoy classic Punch and Judy shows, bringing the seaside experience to life.
York Railway Institute Band Performance – Great Hall, 29 August: A special performance featuring brass band music inspired by holidays and trains, celebrating travel in a unique setting.
