Ok so obviously this place is moreso targeted at kids than adults. It has a fun little talk at the beginning which requires audience participation, and a good amount of activities for kids to enjoy within the gallery. But the place is still so fun to visit as an adult! The ride is really interesting (both what they tell you and the ride itself with the cool sets and animatronics) and super immersive, and then the museum!!! SO SO SO much cool stuff and awesome staff willing to give you so much information and answer all your questions. They even had a staff member for the ride queue that showed off some objects and explained them. It was really great and I had the best time. So great of a time that the only picture I took was of the poo.

We had the most fantastic day at the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, and I honestly can’t recommend it enough — especially for families with young children. We visited with our 5-year-old son, and from the moment we stepped inside, we knew it was going to be a special experience. What makes this place stand out straight away is the way it brings Viking history to life. Instead of simply walking around reading boards (which can be tough for little legs and even tougher for short attention spans), you’re taken on a ride through a recreated Viking village. The ride system was such a smart idea — not only does it mean you don’t get tired walking, but you’re guided smoothly through the full story without missing anything. It felt immersive and exciting, almost like stepping back in time. For us as parents, it made everything easier. For our son, it felt like an adventure. The scenes are detailed and full of life — the sights, the sounds, even the atmosphere make it feel real. You’re not just learning dates and facts; you’re seeing how Vikings lived, worked, and evolved over time. Our son was fascinated by the houses, the tools, and the everyday life of the people. It sparked so many questions, and that’s where the staff truly made the day unforgettable. The team there are absolutely brilliant. So energetic, friendly, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They didn’t just “do their job” — they engaged with us. Our 5-year-old asked some very random and oddly specific questions (as 5-year-olds do!), and every single one was answered with patience and enthusiasm. Not once did anyone brush him off. In fact, they leaned into his curiosity, which made him feel heard and important. You could see his confidence grow as he spoke with them. That meant so much to us as parents. They clearly know their history inside out, but they explain it in such a natural, simple way that both adults and children can understand and enjoy it together. It never felt overwhelming or too heavy — just interesting, engaging, and fun. We left feeling like we’d genuinely learned something as a family. It wasn’t just a day out; it was an experience we shared, talked about afterwards, and will remember for a long time. If you’re visiting York, this is an absolute must-see — especially if you have young explorers in your family. We’ll definitely be back!

The staff were super engaging and really made the experience! It makes a big difference having engagement from people to really immerse yourself in the history. The animatronics were super life like! We were very impressed by this experience, nothing we have experienced before! If you have young children this would be a hit. With its ride-like atmosphere plus the museum, it’s a great mix of engagement for younger children and adults. Biggest tip, get there early and buy tickets in advance. We were 5 minutes late and unfortunately missed a bit of the introduction, so make sure you have lots of time. We also attended in the earliest time slot which was great from a crowd perspective. The line when we finished the experience was HUGE (and we were visiting during the winter, February) - this might be something worth getting up early for!

JORVIK Viking Centre is an immersive Viking museum in York, built directly on top of the original archaeological excavation that uncovered Viking‑age York (Jórvík). The experience includes a ride‑through reconstruction of 10th‑century Viking streets and a gallery displaying artefacts found on the actual site. Entry costs £17.50 for an adult, and the full visit takes around one hour. It’s a genuinely educational and engaging activity, especially if you’re visiting York and want to understand its Viking history.

Well organised and lovely friendly staff. A lovely way to spend 45 minutes. A 10 minutes introduction on a big screen is followed by a ride around the vast part of the Jorvik centre before ending up in the museum which is equally fascinating. The cart ride around points out the history with narration included. It's fascinating and tells a great story about the way things were. Would return in a heart beat. Visited 27th of December 2025
