Amazing 200 year history of trains all in one place! Ample car parking £10. But most importantly next to Yorks main railway station. Museum free to get in. Couple of attractions are payable. Always good to make a donation to help preserve this British history museum. Trains well spaced out and numbered. Couple of places to get food and drinks. Staff very knowledgeable when you ask questions. Toilets clean and tidy. Railway archive room was very interesting. Artifacts from all over Britain. Last visited 35 years ago, had my photo taken next to the Mallard again, so I could remenis. Hopefully visit again soon and not leave as long! Restoration at it's best.
Really great museum which shows the impressive history of British railways. There is plenty of trains with locomotives and coaches from different periods and different manufacturers. It’s a pity that one can not visit most of the coaches. The museum is under renovation so one my one hall was available. We wanted to see the flying Scotsman iconic train but there was only virtual reality tour (extra paid). I took one star off because we couldn’t see the full exhibition (with the halls closed) and flying Scotsman being somewhere on the tour. Otherwise great experience. The museum is free to visit.
Great museum, we weren't crazy train fans but really enjoyed our visit, especially since it's free (we did give the recommended donation). There are lots of trains to see, with well written explanations and we learnt a lot about the history of trains. The place is going through some renovations and expansion, we would definitely visit again once they are done, as I believe this place has huge potential to be one of the top train museums in the UK.
It says to book online but you can pay there. Booked online with suggested £5 donation. Well worth it brilliant collection of trains and carriages, well laid out. Good for kids and disabled. Thoroughly recommend!
Highly recommend this place. So much to look at. Well worth a visit. Lovely cafe also.
