About York Theatre Royal
Description
Rievaulx Abbey was once one of the wealthiest monasteries in medieval England. St Aelred, the abbey’s third abbot, described it as ‘everywhere peace, everywhere serenity’ and it still offers the same sense of escapism for a holiday today. In 1538, the abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII during the suppression of the monasteries and much of its contents stripped. For much of its later life, Rievaulx was seen as picturesque ruins and an increasingly popular visitor destination during the 18th century when the first attempts to preserve the ruins were made. Refectory Cottage is an ideal spot from which to explore the North York Moors. The Cleveland Way is on your doorstep and you can head into the city of York. Walk from the abbey to the nearby town of Helmsley and try the local craft beer or the award winning fish and chips.

My first visit to York Theatre Royal and it won’t be the last. I visited to see the Military Wives musical-an amazing experience! The theatre is relatively small but very well thought out. I was in row G and had a fantastic view of the stage; the sound was good too. I loved the ornate design of the theatre; it looks really well maintained, clean and tidy. There is a large cafe on the ground floor-I didn’t get to visit it today but it looked very busy so is obviously popular. A really lovely venue; highly recommended! Edit: December 2025 Visited the Theatre again, this time to use the cafe. Excellent coffee and a really lovely vibe in the cafe area. I did have a gf mince pie which was very tasty but that was the only gf option (and not everyone likes mince pies!) Lovely staff, very clean and tastefully decorated. Toilet facilities close by. Will be adding it to my list of favourite places to have a coffee when in York!
We're went to see Sleeping beauty here. It was absolutely amazing, brilliant actors,, lovely theatre, very homely feel inside 🤗🥰 will definitely try to come and stay in York again next year for the Panto 😁
As thatres go this place has a beautiful "feel" about it . I would describe it as quaint . Seems to be able to handle a large volume of people pretty well . Two things , in my opinion that let it down. The price of the panto tickets I paid , £47.50 x 2 was a bit steep in this season of Goodwill to all men abd the upper dress circle didn't have the best of views a few rows back .
Congratulations to the cast and crew for the best Panto Iv ever seen. Totally brilliant. Very very funny, great script, great jokes, a bit rude but for the adults! Fantastic make up on the ugly sisters! Something for everyone. The costume designs were incredible. Go see it!
Wonderful Pantomine Sleeping Beauty 2026. We also went last year 2025. Adults and children enjoy the show. We have already booked for 2027 we have a really good afternoon. The cast have all been great especially the wonderful Dame. Thank you all.xx
