About York Mansion House

Description

York Mansion House

York Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York, positioned at the heart of city society and civic life for almost 300 years.

A masterpiece of 18th century architecture and a celebration of the city it inhabits, York Mansion House and its infamous residents have a colourful history, filled with scandal, decadence and outlandish feasting. Following extensive restoration, in 2018 the house opened to the public for the first time, allowing all to experience this extravagant mayoral life, and take an interactive walk through York’s Georgian past.

From July 22nd 2020, we’re delighted to be reopening with a series of brand new, bookable guided tours. With visitor safety our priority, we have put a number of steps in place to ensure you feel welcome, safe and comfortable during your visit with us. Head to our website to find out how we’ve been getting ready for this new chapter.

On all our tours, you will visit all four floors of this remarkable building. Following the sweeping staircase throughout the house, you will bypass the intimate Drawing Room flooded with light, galleries housing a the largest collection of civic silver outside London, and shadowy rooms filled with robes of Lord Mayors past and present. Moving downstairs, discover the working, historically recreated Georgian kitchen, complete with winding passages of pantries and store-cupboards.

While our usual iPad guides, interactives and adventures for little ones are out of action, a number of special tours are being created to fill that gap, and showcase behind-the-scenes of York Mansion House. Follow us on social or sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know what’s coming next.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to York Mansion House: the heart of city society for 300 years.

What a treat! It’s almost Christmas so York was absolutely heaving with shoppers, but today I decided to be a tourist and visit the Mansion House. I paid a minimal charge ( if you are a York resident I think it’s free) and was loaned an iPad which gave me lots of information about the rooms and their contents. The rooms are really amazing, particularly the State Room and the decor and contents become more opulent the higher you go. Lovely, knowledgeable staff! Highly recommend visiting!

I had a wonderful time ! The staff were amazing - I had lots of questions and the person behind the till answered all my questions. I wish I remembered their name - this amazing person shared some really interesting information about the fashion of the period and what this suggests about the political beliefs of the woman in the portrait in the main hallway! It was so incredibly fun and beautiful! I do wish the museum had slightly more physical placecards around -the tablets are great for accessibility but the screen breaks the immersion!

Excellent visit to York Mansion House on Saturday 8th November. Friendly and informative staff. We thought it was good value bearing in mind 25% discount with English Heritage membership and £1.50 discount for Students. iPad audio guides were novel and thus were useful and engaging. Great first visit.

What a beautiful and well preserved building. Amazing to be able to just walk around the rooms. The free interactive hand held guide was useful and the fixed interactive pads in all the rooms, alot of history and some interesting facts. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff when asked questions. Would recommended a visit
