About Murton Park
Description
Murton Park is the home of the Yorkshire Museum of Farming, the Danelaw Centre for Living History and the Derwent Valley Light Railway. The 16 acre site is located on the outskirts of York and is a great place for kids to let off steam with plenty of open space, an adventure playground and ride-on tractors!
During the school holidays we run Viking and Tudor themed family workshops on topics such as making oil lamps, spear and shield drill and candle dipping. Special event weekends are also hosted throughout the year.
The museum has a collection of historic farming equipment, including a range of vintage tractors, which are displayed in two main buildings and across the site. The Four Seasons Gallery includes the story of the farming year from winter ploughing to autumn harvest and an exhibition about the Women’s Land Army in the First and Second World Wars. The Livestock Gallery explores the rearing of animals and the produce they give us. Both have fun interactive features for children.
We have a collection of livestock, including Shetland ponies, goats, pigs, rabbits and poultry; most of the animals are very friendly and visitors can get close enough to say 'Hi'.
Given our rural setting there is also lots of wildlife to see on our nature trail.
The Danelaw Centre for Living History is an education facility with a reconstructed Viking Village, Roman Fort and Tudor House. When these buildings are not being used by school children they are free to explore.
Also on site is the last remaining stretch of the historic Derwent Valley Light Railway which runs trains for visitors on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
The museum closes at the end of October until Easter or the first weekend in April (whatever is first).

Museum of farming with lots of farming equipment. Definitely a great place to visit with kids as there are two replica villages - a roman fort and and a viking village. Would suggest to visit on the weekend as during the midweek there can be school groups. Dog friendly place.
The Christmas experience was amazing! All the staff were brilliant, all in costume and playing a part. The kids had the best time. Thank you.
Absolutely brilliant educational animal / theme park on the outskirts of York, with stunning function room and supporting facilities like bar and cafe. There are life-size trains too. Plenty of free parking. Fab day out. Highly recommended and will use it again.
Great for big and little kids. Unfortunately the Jorvik bit was closed to us because they had a school party in there. We were pre warned before we purchased our tickets. There is plenty to look at and remember to go upstairs in the main barn. You can feed some of the animals and there are little games to play on your way round. There is a play area and a wonderful cafe with quality food. £18 per adult but your tickets last a year, so you can go has many times has you like 👍
Great little place to take the kids, however I did feel the place looked somewhat tired. We went mainly to see the Viking zone as part of the Jorvik Archeology week and some of the buildings their had pieces missing from the roof and walls, so it’s in great need of having some work done on it. The tram gave a fabulous performance to teach young ones about Viking life, and it was extremely insightful for all ages.
