My first visit to the Grand Opera House to see Friends: the Musical unfortunately coincided with Storm Amy! Information stated entry from 5pm with performance starting at 5.30pm. I arrived just before ten past and found a large queue outside where we stood in the rain, to be admitted one at a time with a bag search on the door. First impressions not good! The whole building looked in need of a good lick of paint. I was quite pleased to be sitting right back on row Q as the stage and several rows were sitting in smoke/dry ice or similar. The show was great: fast paced and funny with great audience participation. The seats were not comfortable and my view during the first half was partially obscured by the person in front of me. Luckily not all seats had been taken and they moved during the interval. I had an ice cream during the interval which was very nice but massively overpriced at £4.85! Finally, the toilets: the accessible toilet was just behind my row so very convenient 😹; I decided to visit on leaving as I had a 90 minute journey ahead of me. People had been turned away from the main toilets to use this one; lots of crowding as people were also trying to leave by the adjacent exit. Would I see this show again? Yes Would I visit this venue again? Unlikely

What a great night. We arrived 30 minutes before the show and it was all well organised. We were told where to go while we waited to go to our seats. From the start of the show to the end, it was so entertaining with lots of laughs and audience participation, and we couldn't stop laughing. All the cast played such great characters, and they all had great personalities, which showed during their performance. You can't take photos during the show, but you have a lot of opportunities at the end. If you do nothing else while visiting York, please go and see this show. You won't be disappointed.

Good show, lighting a real highlight. However, seats for a 2.5 hour show just too tight and uncomfortable. Not sure I love the cinema-style "pig-out-during-performance-and-leave-your-rubbish-behind" culture either.
