About the League Cup
The League Cup is the midweek knockout open to every Premier League and English Football League club. For Yorkshire fans it is a second Wembley route for Leeds United FC, Hull City FC, Sheffield Wednesday FC, Sheffield United FC, Barnsley FC, Middlesbrough FC and other Yorkshire sides, regardless of league place.
The 2025/26 League Cup was the 66th staging. Every Premier League and EFL club was eligible.
How the tournament works
- The League Cup is for the 92 Premier League and EFL clubs, in seven rounds arranged so 32 remain at the third. Pairings in every round except the final are a random draw.
- Clubs in European competition sit out until the third round. Other Premier League clubs enter at the second. Most EFL clubs — including Hull City FC, Sheffield Wednesday FC, Sheffield United FC and Middlesbrough FC when they are in the Championship or below — enter at the first. Championship byes or a preliminary round keep the third round at 32.
- A preliminary round is used only when the calendar needs it; 2025/26 was one of those seasons.
- In 2025/26 the preliminary, first and second rounds were split into Northern and Southern sections. From the third round the draw is national, which is when a Yorkshire club can be pulled against anyone still standing.
- Every round is a single match except the semi-finals, which are two-legged. Since 2018/19 extra time is used only in the final; other level ties go to penalties, including the semi-finals, with no away-goals rule.
