Owner’s Description
The Bivouac at Druid’s Temple is all about accommodation that is rustic, rugged, warm, characterful and sensitive to our natural surroundings. We provided a little luxury mixed in with a lot of attention to detail to create a warm, comfortable and, above all, simple environment for you to enjoy your holiday in. Situated just a few miles from Masham, on the edge of the moors, the Bivouac provides accommodation in luxury Tree Lodges, Yurts and a Bunk Barn, and day visitors are also welcome to enjoy the café and take a walk in the woods surrounding the Druid’s Temple, an 18th Century folly with standing stone circles and features throughout the woodland, with views across the Dales and Leighton Reservoir.
Fanned out in the fringes of our woodland hilltop are our six luxury Tree Lodges, which have been hand built by members of the winning Grand Designs team, using the round timber design (using timber sourced from the surrounding Swinton Estate and wool insulation sourced from Cumbria). These sleep seven on a triple bunk, so ideally suited for a large family or two couples. There is an open plan living space with wood burner, kitchen and dining space, a shower and WC, and a large verandah to take in the sweeping views of the Yorkshire Dales. The Tree Lodges are completely self-sufficient in that the wood burner heats the room, has an oven and hotplate for cooking, and also heats hot water for the shower.
A short walk down the hill is the converted barn complex with reception, shop, bunk barn (sleeping 12), café and shower/WC unit. In the adjoining field, there are eight Yurts, each sleeping four, with hand made beds and comfortable furnishings, a wood burner and sink.
Our guests can retreat, enjoy quiet reflection and snuggle down with a good book or engage in more energetic activities such as climbing, falconry, pony trekking, foraging or fly fishing. From long walks across wild moorland to a cup of tea and copious amounts of cake in our café, we believe that life can be shared honestly and simply. Our eco credentials are unrivalled, with forestry thinnings from the Swinton Estate used for all our logs and wood chip, a carbon neutral woodchip boiler, spring fed water, and a grey water system and reed bed for the entire site. There is no electricity in either the Tree Lodges or Yurts (but there are charging sockets available at reception).
