Description
Step back in time on The Railway Children’s Railway in the heart of Brontë Country and enjoy a steam filled action packed day out!
Keighley & Worth Valley Railway runs like a ribbon though Brontë Country, where you can expect to take in some of the most breathtaking and famous landscapes in the world. A windswept land of heather and wild moors – it is hardly surprising that this area became the inspiration for the classic works of the Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne.
The Railway has appeared in many TV and film productions including Sherlock Holmes, Peaky Blinders, Disney’s 2019 remake of Dumbo and many more. Perhaps most famously, the Railway, and in particular the charming station at Oakworth, were used as the location for the classic 1970 film The Railway Children. Step back in time and relive this well-loved tale as you watch the vintage steam trains puff their way in and out of the valley.
Keighley and Worth Valley Railway was more recently featured in All Creatures Great and Small.
Much more than just a railway, Keighley & Worth Valley Railway offers a great day out for all ages. Don’t forget to hop off the line at Ingrow West station, which is home to two award-winning transport museums. Travel back in time at The Carriage Works, where restored carriages, vintage artefacts and sound and video presentations bring the past to life. The Engine Shed boasts several locomotives as well as displays, exhibits and archive film.
Don’t miss out on the special events that run throughout the year. From the sell-out Santa Steam Special to Halloween and more, there is always something going on. Discover the magic and glamour of the Old Gentleman’s Saloon as the affluent would many years ago whilst enjoying strawberries and cream with a delightful glass of prosecco. Tickle your taste buds on the Haworth Haddock or Steam & Spice where you can enjoy an evening meal with a live band! There’s even an annual Beer & Music Festival where over 120 real ales and great food are served with entertainment at both ends of the line!
For those that like the great outdoors the railway has plenty of spectacular walks and nature trails. Every stop offers something different, whether it’s moorland or one of The Railway Children walks – make sure you have your walking boots at the ready. Try the Top Withens Walk, which takes you out of Haworth, through the village where the Brontë sisters lived and wrote, along pathways they walked and through the moorland that inspired them.
