|In recent weeks, the UK has faced a wave of unrest, with riots and violence challenging the social fabric of many communities. However, in Bradford, a city known for its rich diversity, a different kind of gathering took place—a celebration of unity and inclusivity through the beloved sport of cricket.
A joint initiative by the Platform for Indian Democracy and Roshni UK brought together youth cricket clubs and the South Asian community for a friendly match, demonstrating the power of sports to foster connection and harmony.

A sporting event with a purpose
The friendly cricket match, held at the historic Bradford Park Avenue Cricket Ground in West Yorkshire, was more than just a game; it was a statement of community resilience and solidarity.
The event drew over 80 participants, including young cricketers from King Cross Junior Cricket Club U15 and Batley Cricket Club U15, as well as community leaders and residents. These teams, primarily composed of young players from South Asian backgrounds, came together to showcase their talents and highlight the values of teamwork and mutual respect.
Promoting unity and integrity through cricket
Raul Lai, lead organiser at the Platform for Indian Democracy, highlighted the significance of the event. He explained,
“This match was more than just a game. Talented young players showed us the values of teamwork, respect, and integrity as they battled against the rain at Park Avenue in Bradford. This stood in stark contrast to the violence and hatred witnessed during the recent riots. It is these values which the Platform stands for and wants to see championed in India.”
Through cricket, the participants not only enjoyed the sport but also reinforced the importance of unity and shared values that are crucial in today’s divided climate.
Fostering sportsmanship and respect
Imran Dawood, Director of Roshni UK, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the role of sportsmanship and mutual respect during the match. He remarked,
“In the recent under-15 cricket match between Batley cricket club and King Cross cricket club, teamwork and sportsmanship were the real highlights. Whether it was checking on an injured opponent or celebrating each other’s successes, both teams embodied the true spirit of cricket. This match was a perfect reminder that cricket is not just about winning, but about playing together with respect and integrity.”
This focus on sportsmanship highlighted the event's broader purpose: to teach young people the values of empathy, collaboration, and respect—qualities that transcend the cricket field.
The role of community organisations in promoting inclusivity
The event was further supported by Bradford 2025, an organisation dedicated to fostering positive change through community events. John Strawson-Rooney, Volunteer Programme Lead at Bradford 2025, expressed his support for the match, stating,
"Bradford 2025 was delighted to support the event. We are committed to supporting community events that unite people and promote positive change through teamwork and inclusion."
He added that grassroots initiatives like this are vital for creating a lasting legacy of unity and inclusivity in the community.
Building bridges through sport
Mohammed Safraz, coach of Batley Cricket Club, also praised the event's impact, particularly in bringing together young people from South Asian communities.
“It has been great to get together two young teams, from mostly South Asian communities, to play a competitive cricket match at the historic Bradford Park Avenue. It's important to have more young people getting together in the name of teamwork and interacting with others in the community,”
Safraz noted. He pointed out that such events are crucial for championing causes like inclusivity and diversity, which the Platform for Indian Democracy and Roshni UK strive to promote.
A step towards stronger, more inclusive communities
The friendly cricket match in Bradford was more than a sporting event; it was a powerful response to the divisive forces at play across the UK. By bringing together young players from different backgrounds to celebrate South Asian heritage, the organisers highlighted the potential of sports to unite communities and promote shared values. As the participants played under the unpredictable Yorkshire skies, they demonstrated that cricket, a sport with deep roots in many cultures, can serve as a bridge between different communities, fostering a spirit of unity and inclusivity.
This event in Bradford shows the power of grassroots initiatives in building stronger, more inclusive communities. As the UK continues to navigate challenging times, such efforts are more important than ever, reminding us that there is strength in diversity and that unity can be achieved through shared experiences, whether on the cricket field or beyond.
