|It’s that time of year again. The nights are drawing in, there’s a definite chill in the air, and everyone’s starting to think about how to get into the Christmas spirit without spending a fortune. Well, for anyone near Pontefract and Castleford, the search for brilliant festive fun is over. Wakefield Council has announced the return of its much-loved Festive Markets, and it looks like this season is going to be packed with sparkle, entertainment, and some fantastic activities for everyone. It’s all about creating a real sense of community spirit and making sure there are plenty of reasons to visit the local high streets.

A proper celebration of community and creativity
These events aren't just about buying a few bits and bobs for Christmas. They're a full-on celebration of what makes the local area special. Imagine wandering through stalls filled with unique, handcrafted gifts made by people from just down the road. This isn't the usual stuff seen in big shops; it's things made with real care and creativity. And when people get a bit peckish, there’s a whole world of global street food to try. It’s a chance to taste something new while soaking up the festive atmosphere. The whole idea behind these markets is to support local traders and give them a platform to show off their amazing talents. It’s these kinds of events that really bolster the high streets, bringing people out and creating a buzz. The markets in Pontefract and Castleford are designed to be a hub of community spirit, where people can meet up, have a laugh, and enjoy the season together.
So, what’s actually on the calendar?
Right, let's get down to the details. There are some key dates for the diary across both Castleford and Pontefract throughout November and December. The programme of events is designed to offer a bit of everything, from shopping opportunities to hands-on activities. All of the events are part of a wider push to provide exciting and accessible festive fun for everyone in the area.
Here are the highlights of the scheduled activities:
- Continental Street Market: This popular market is making a comeback to Castleford from 4–7 December. It’s the perfect place to find interesting foods and gifts from further afield, adding a bit of international flavour to the Christmas shopping.
- Elf School Craft Sessions: Get ready for some serious creativity. There will be four free Elf School craft sessions held across the Castleford and Pontefract markets. These will run every Saturday from 29 November right up to 20 December. It’s a brilliant, no-cost way for kids to get creative during the Christmas season.
- KLH Craft Market: For those who love beautifully made items, the KLH Craft Market is setting up at Castleford Market on Saturday, 20 December. This is a great chance to find that perfect, one-of-a-kind handcrafted gift.
- Pop-up Ice Rink: And now for the main event! The fantastic pop-up ice rink returns to Castleford Indoor Market from 21–30 December. It promises heaps of fun for all ages and is a real centrepiece of the Christmas celebration.
Bringing people together this season
It's clear that Wakefield Council is passionate about making these events a success and supporting the local community. The focus is very much on creating a vibrant atmosphere that benefits both residents and local businesses.
Cllr Jack Hemingway, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth, said:
“Our Festive Markets are a brilliant way to bring people together, support our high streets and showcase our incredible local talent and creativity. Whether you’re shopping for gifts or enjoying the entertainment, there’s something for everyone, and it’s all happening right on your doorstep.”
This really sums it up. These markets are a fantastic opportunity to see the incredible creativity that exists locally. From the stalls to the live entertainment, it’s all about a local celebration. Supporting these events means supporting the people and the high streets that make these towns tick.
Get ready to skate at the pop-up ice rink
Let’s talk more about that ice rink. For many, a bit of ice skating is what makes it really feel like Christmas. The return of the pop-up ice rink to Castleford is brilliant news. Being located at the Indoor Market is a clever move – it means the fun can continue no matter what the British weather decides to do. So, from 21 to 30 December, people can head down and have a go. It's one of those classic Christmas activities that’s just as much fun to watch as it is to take part in. Imagine gliding around with festive music playing, surrounded by the buzz of the markets. It’s the kind of experience that creates great memories. This pop-up ice rink is set to be a huge part of the local entertainment this December.
Fun that’s free, inclusive, and easy to join
One of the best things about this whole programme of festive fun is how simple and accessible it is. In a world where everything seems to need booking weeks in advance, Wakefield Council has made things refreshingly straightforward. All the events are free to attend. Better still, for the most popular activities like the Elf School and the ice skating, there's no need to book a ticket. People can just turn up and join in. This makes everything feel much more relaxed and spontaneous. It’s designed to be completely inclusive, ensuring that everyone feels welcome to come along and be part of the celebration. The free Elf School craft sessions, for example, are a wonderful way for families to enjoy some quality time together without worrying about the cost. It’s all about providing genuinely joyful and accessible activities for the entire community during this special season.
