A canal walk in Wakefield, Aire & Calder Navigation
This walk from Wakefield to Castleford combines lovely countryside with a step into the region's industrial past. The Route what3words for start point: ///evenly.mental.burns Start Point: Wakefield Finish Point: Castleford Distance: 9 Miles GPX Route Map wakefield-canalDownload Walk Description Follow the route of Wakefield canal from the centre of the town on the river Calder to Castleford and take in the pretty scenery as well as the industrial heritage of the region. Highlights of the walk are the Stanley Ferry aqueducts, one Victorian structure and the other a modern construction in the 1980's built to compliment the original. You will also see the southlands wetlands centre on route and this is a nice stop off for the family. The walk also passes very close to the world famous Hepworth gallery before heading off to Castleford.

Walk: Fryston Trails - Short Route
A short walk around some areas of The Fryston Country Trails, in Fryston near Castleford West Yorkshire. The route is mainly flat and takes in countryside paths, with viewing points along the way such as horse stables and large bodies of open water/lakes. There are often lots of butterflies along the initial walking path too so great photo opportunity. There are suitable stopping points to have a picnic etc if the weather is nice. There are also further paths along the route if you wish to deviate from the route and walk further if you prefer longer walks.

Walk: Castleford Lock
This short walk, perfect for spotting boats, takes you along the Aire & Calder Navigation. The Route What3Words reference point:Β ///loves.sushi.stove Start Point: Castleford Lock, WF10 2LN Finish Point: Castleford Lock, WF10 2LN Distance: 1.5 Miles GPX Route Map castlefordDownload Walk Description Start your walk at Castleford Lock, where parking is available. Castleford Lock is the junction for the Aire & Calder Navigation, where you can head towards Wakefield, Leeds or Knottingley on the water. Follow the Navigation towards the bridge and head under the road on the footpath. Once you have passed under the road follow the wide path along the waterway. You will see a variety of boats moored up and may even spot a fisherman or ducks along the way. When you reach Bulholme Lock you can continue your walk into RSPB Fairburn Ings or taking care use the lock to cross the Navigation and head back down the canal on the opposite side. Use the towpath to head back down the canal and you will reach the road, continue along the road, past the boatyard until you reach the main road. Cross the main road and pick up the path that will take you back to green space around Castleford Lock. You can use any of the locks to cross over back to your starting point. Why not take a picnic to enjoy at the end on one of the benches by the water?

This is a lovely short circuit of the town of Pontefract, made famous by the eponymous liquorice cakes and the death of Richard II in the town's castle. The reserve covers waterways, woodland and grassland with open water sections to the site as well. This is a lovely oasis to the pace of modern life and is seen as many in area as a place to find peace. There are several paths to take so you can explore at your own pace.
