|Ever been waiting for a bus and found yourself staring at something properly brilliant? Not just an advert for a new phone, but a piece of actual art. Well, that’s exactly what’s happening across the North of England right now. Hundreds of amazing drawings, doodles, and sketches created by ordinary people are popping up in the most unexpected places.
It's all thanks to a huge nationwide scheme called the DRAW! project, a standout part of the Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture celebrations. The fantastic artworks that people sent in throughout last year are now having their moment in the spotlight, transforming everyday spaces into a massive public gallery. This unique public display celebrates the creative spirit found all over the country and brings a bit of colour to the daily commute.
So, what's the DRAW! project all about?
Basically, for the whole of 2025, the DRAW! project got the entire nation picking up pens, pencils, and even iPads to get creative. The idea was simple: get more people drawing. Inspired by one of Bradford’s most famous sons, the legendary artist David Hockney, the project was a core part of the city’s year as the UK City of Culture. It wasn't about being a professional; it was about giving it a go.
Each month, a different theme was set by one of twelve famous artists, encouraging everyone to look at their lives and the world around them in a new way. And the artists involved were a brilliant mix, from comedian Johnny Vegas and fashion icon Dame Zandra Rhodes to contemporary painter Adébayo Bolaji. Hundreds of people, from kids to grandparents, submitted their artworks, creating a massive collection that captures a snapshot of life across the UK.
From kitchen tables to city centres
After a year of collecting these incredible pieces, the time has come to share them. A huge selection of the submitted artworks are now part of a massive public display. And this isn't a stuffy, quiet gallery exhibition. The art is appearing right where people are, in busy public spaces. People waiting at bus stops, rushing through train stations, or popping into shopping centres across various cities and towns might just spot a masterpiece. The exhibition is taking over public advertising spaces in places like Bradford, Leeds, Manchester, Hull, Liverpool, and Sheffield. This means the creative work of the public is now a part of the urban landscape, celebrating the region's rich culture and heritage. It’s a proper 'art for everyone' moment.
Jenny Harris, who is the Director of Programme at Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, summed it up perfectly. She says,
We received hundreds of sketches, doodles, collages, and the most beautiful artworks from the public, some of which you can view on our website, but now you can see them when you're walking down the street! We encourage everyone, inspired by Bradford’s own David Hockney, to carry on drawing whether that be for artistic expression, wellbeing, or just for the sake of it.
More than just a lovely picture
But the DRAW! project was about more than just making pretty pictures. It had a much deeper purpose: to support mental health. The project was backed by the charity Bradford District and Craven Mind, which provides essential services and support for people's wellbeing. The idea is that taking a few moments to be creative can make a massive difference to how a person feels. It’s a way to slow down, express feelings without words, and just get lost in something for a bit. The response from participants shows just how powerful this can be. One of the youngest contributors, 9-year-old Savannah, said, “I like drawing because I get to be in my world. I feel proud that it is on display to lots of people and I hope it puts smiles on their faces.”
It’s an experience shared across generations. Tim, aged 70, felt the same magic. “Time doesn’t exist when I’m drawing. It takes me out of myself. Everyone can draw, at any age. There’s always something else to learn. It helps us see the world and to conjure up new ones. Draw on your own. Draw together. It feels great to have my drawing on display to celebrate my home-town’s City of Culture year.”
Helen Davey, the CEO of Bradford District and Craven Mind, added, “The DRAW! project shows how powerful drawing can be in supporting mental wellbeing, helping people slow down, express their emotions and feel more connected to themselves and others. At Bradford District and Craven Mind, we have seen first-hand how doing creative activities can boost confidence, reduce stress and open up conversations about mental health for people of all ages.”
A big boost for Bradford and beyond
Being the UK City of Culture is a massive deal for any place, and Bradford has truly embraced it. The title has brought significant investment into the region, shining a light on its unique heritage and dynamic, modern culture. The Bradford 2025 programme has been packed with events and performances celebrating everything from the city's historic centre to its beautiful countryside. This investment isn't just for one year, either; it's designed to have a lasting impact through education, training, and new opportunities for local creative organisations.
The whole thing is a huge team effort, with support from sponsors like Allwyn UK and public funding from major bodies including the Arts Council England. This widespread support ensures that the cultural celebration reaches every corner of the community. The exhibition of these artworks in cities and towns across the north is a perfect example of how the spirit of Bradford 2025 is being shared far and wide, putting creativity and community at the front and centre. So keep an eye out next time you’re on the move – you might just see some art that makes your day.
