|Get ready, because a seriously big name is heading to Leeds for a special one-night-only event. The incredible Candice Brathwaite—a Sunday Times bestselling author, journalist, and all-round powerhouse—is coming to the Leeds Playhouse on Tuesday, November 11. It’s not a lecture or a formal talk, but something much better: an ‘in conversation’ evening. Think of it as being a fly on the wall during a really interesting chat between friends, where you also get to ask questions. This is a chance to hear directly from one of the most important voices in modern Britain.

So, who is Candice Brathwaite?
If you haven’t heard of Candice Brathwaite, you’re in for a treat. She’s way more than just an author or a journalist. She’s a leading diversity advocate, a podcaster, and a TV presenter who has a knack for talking about big, important subjects in a way that just makes sense. She’s written some massively popular books, including the Sunday Times bestsellers I Am Not Your Baby Mother, Sista Sister, and her latest book, Manifesto.
Candice is known for her honest and refreshing takes on everything from motherhood to the Black British experience. Her work has opened up conversations that were long overdue, especially for Black women. She’s the kind of person who says what everyone’s thinking but might be too nervous to say out loud. And that’s what makes her so brilliant. This event in Leeds is a fantastic opportunity to see that energy live. She’s a true force in the world of arts and culture, and her approach to storytelling is second to none.
What’s this 'in conversation' event all about?
Imagine sitting down for a coffee and a proper natter about life, the universe, and everything. That’s the vibe of an 'in conversation' event. Candice will be on stage at the Leeds Playhouse, having a relaxed chat about her life, her career, and her thoughts on a whole load of topics. It’s a chance to go beyond the pages of her books and get a real insight into what makes her tick.
The conversation will cover a lot of ground. Here are just a few things on the agenda:
- Her hugely successful 'Closet Confessions' podcast.
- Insights into the Black British experience.
- Her thoughts on motherhood and family life.
- Why diversity and inclusivity are so important for brands.
- Life lessons she wishes she’d known as a young Black girl in London—from money and family to fashion and Black hair.
A big part of the evening will focus on her latest bestseller, Manifesto. In the book, she explores how people can manifest the life they truly deserve. This isn’t about fluffy, abstract ideas; it’s about practical, real-world ways to take control and build the future you want. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to her work, this chat promises to be inspiring and packed with powerful storytelling.
The people making it happen: Out of Many People and Rooted
This amazing event isn’t happening by magic. It’s organised by a Leeds-based group called Out of Many People, in partnership with the Leeds Playhouse. Their whole mission is to champion Black storytelling through brilliant arts, heritage, and cultural programming here in the North. Basically, they put on events that showcase incredible talent and share important stories. Whether you know a Chris, a Sam, or a Jo, everyone can appreciate the need for this kind of cultural programming.
This particular event is part of a bigger series called Rooted, which is the first programme from Out of Many People designed to celebrate Black arts and culture.
Susan Pitter, the co-founder of the organisation, will be the one conducting the interview with the bestselling author. She’s clearly buzzing about it:
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Candice Brathwaite to Leeds. Candice is an inspirational, powerhouse voice for so many people, particularly Black women in this country. It’s a real privilege to be able to share a stage with such a leading light in Black British culture on what will no doubt be a memorable evening.”
Your chance to get involved
The best part about this 'in conversation' event is that it’s not a one-way street. After the main chat and interview, the floor will be opened up for an audience Q&A. This is your moment to ask Candice that question you’ve been dying to ask. Ever wondered about her writing process, her inspirations, or her advice on a particular topic? Now’s your chance. It’s a really cool interactive element that makes the evening feel personal.
And it doesn’t stop there. After the audience Q&A, there will be a book-signing session. You can grab a copy of her latest Sunday Times bestseller, Manifesto, and get it signed by the author herself. It’s the perfect way to round off an inspiring evening and take a little piece of the magic home with you.
